Personally I don't see the big draw, but over here, In My Neighborhood, on the main drag, they are just about at every business. Got a customer of mine who needs to replace the existing one that is on the present sign at his new business. Along with those type of signs, a very popular sign here is the "Flashing Arrow" sign with the chageable letters. Very visual when placed on the bed of a rusted pick-up truck. Just pull it out and in every day,,,,followed by an extension cord for power.

Si, That's exactly what I am thinking of doing. How did you ever read my mind from so far away.

A pan face allows for a narrower, less expensive cabinet. Also, thinner plastic can be used, since the pan forming adds rigidity to the face. A pan can eliminate the need for a hanging bar in some cases. Embossed lettering adds even more stiffness, though it's a pain in the neck to spray paint. The embossing also renders the face impossible to reuse. This, along with the sometimes oddball shapes of the cabinets, are a plus for the manufacturer in theory. So the bottom line is cost. These signs are not meant to be attractive, just cheap...and visible at night. To the owner or patron of a dive bar, this may be all that matters. Some US manufacturers of these signs keep salesmen on the road to provide a steady stream of business.
Unfortunately not all such signs are ugly. In large quantities, some very nice looking signs can be had for very attractive prices, especially from manufacturers with low paid workforces.
The following is a contour cabinet with a flat face, screen-printed in translucent inks. Of course the design is no doubt provided by the beer maker.
The ad copy reads:
Min. Order: 100. FOB Price: US $100-150 Bar pub sign 1. Silk screen printing on acrylic 2. Long life outdoor illumination life & color durability. 3. Metal frame...
A simpler cabinet with a pan face:
Min. Order: 100. FOB Price: US $40.00-70.00 Bar pub sign 1. Vacuum formed acrylic with silk screen printing; 2. T8 energy saving tube light; 3. Aluminum profile....
Multi-colored neon is cheap in quantity, too.
Cost?
Min. Order: 100 Pieces FOB Price: US $15-30 Bicycle Bike Beer Bar Pub Neon Light Sign 1.high brightness &easy installation 2.Neon Sign
We repair these neon units here in Kansas City occasionally, for any where from 75. to 200.
