I just received an e-mail regarding a glass gold job. I will quote them doing the traditional method but I'd like to approach another option. I know SignGold can be used but I'm not familiar with the process. Does it require a special type pf SignGold? Cut in reverse? What about the outline, cookie cut to avoid the trapped air? How does the overall look compare to a real glass gold window? This is a large window with some large lettering on it. It's been at least twenty five years since my last glass gold window and, Oh yea, this is in a restaurant that is in operation. My candy ass is looking for the easy way out.

I know how you feel George about doing a traditional glass gild. I would probably chicken out myself if it was a difficult inscription to be done. I can remember back in days gone by when we did 1" high bank hours in 23k gold leaf with a black shadow and outline! I used to do a typical reverse water gild window in about 6 hours. It would probably take me a day and a half now. I've used SignGold in the past and as I recall the job turned out nice. But personally, I believe the traditional gold leaf with water size on glass is much better looking.

George, go for the real thing, you will be surprised how quickly all the it all comes back to you. There seems to be a few more people down our way who are asking about gold on glass.

If you can't go the real stuff, I would suggest SignGold on the outside of the glass. Lay down the black first and then put the gold over the top of the black allowing for the outline and shade.
I put this on the glass at my studio twenty years ago and it still looks new.

If you want the swirled SignGold you HAVE to do it on the outside because it isn't available for the interior reverse cut application. You CAN get the mirrored version for interior application. We've used it both ways but for the BEST, the real stuff is prettier and more long lasting.

This job has been done before in the traditional manner. I'm not crazy about doing it either way to be frank. Too many ways to screw it up. This is a big window, the lettering looks to be spread over six feet with the letters themselves looking to be about 10 inches tall and it's right next to the entrance door. The place is open from 11-11 seven days a week.

About sealing the edges - mine has been up 20 years without sealing the edges and it's still perfect. That might not work on a vehicle, but on my glass window, it's done fine.

I tried sealing a customer job once using a Seal It pen on the Florentine swirl. The edges of the SignGold kept grabbing the felt tip. What a pain.
My own pickup truck has had SignGold on it for almost 11 years now with no sealer and only one skinny stroke of one letter has come off just recently. And they use a lot of salt through harsh winters up here.

I never sealed edges,if the surface is properly cleaned (with rapid tac) then you will have a complete bond out to the edges. Always clean first with Rapid Tac or Tac II and a cheap, cheap kitchen paper towel, it really makes a big difference!

I would go with the real thing as it should be way more profitable. Also it could lead to other gold window jobs as there not a lot of guys around doing that stuff. Anybody can apply the sticker anyway. I wish I would live closer George, it would be a fun job to do together!
Life is so good!

SignGold is easy, but it doesn't look like a water gild. Nothing really does.
When I outline it, I just use it first surface with the gold on top of the black. I've used the second surface version and backed up with an outline/shade with paint to avoid the bubble problem, but honestly, it was not worth the trouble.

Sign Gold does not look like gold. A job done with it does not provide the satisfaction of doing a credible gold job. The faces of onlookers don't hold the amazement of those watching leaf laid or gold being back up by a guy lettering backwards. SignGold holds up though. It survives ultraviolet, window washers, steamed up windows, grease film distributed by air conditioning, etc.
Only time I've sealed edges were on low budget fire trucks.
Have you guys found problems with SignGold tunneling?

Maybe it's a New England thing. I've had edges lift when not sealed. I agree with Lenny. And if you do I recommend doing it with a brush. I've seen edges sealed with the pen and still lift.

If the film is cleaned properly, no edge lift. If the film was applied over incompatable residues (left from improper cleaning methods) then the edges may lift or not survive the car wash. Think about this, was the product you clean with designed to be under the adhesive, anything you clean with will leave residues, the question then becomes, are those residues compatable (designed to work with the adhesive?).

Right now, it doesn't look like this is going to happen. I was supposed to get a phone call the day after the e-mail. It never came. I e-mailed them back, seems like the e-mail they sent me was at best premature, that this is a corporation with an abundance of chiefs who don't communicate with each other.......time will tell.
