I'm lettering and striping an old horse drawn delivery wagon. Where can I find reference material on the simple striping & scroll designs used then (1880-1910). It was heavy lines, not very fancy. Thanks, Bob'T'

There are several old manuals and instruction books available from the library of congress from that era and many are illustrated,...I suggest a search on their website,...I found over 50 trade books on signage and several others on showcards and carriage decorating they can all be downloaded and read on your computer,..and printed out for personal use as the copyrights have expired,...
or click on the keywords under the heading for carriage and wagon decororating and you should get a link to two manuals on the subject ...be careful what you ask for you might just get it,...

You should have some reference material buried in your shop somewhere. Isn't that around the period you started painting?

Sorry about that. It seems that my lovely wife and our daughter had way to much time on their hands. They tied to post a small mildly obnoxious show card done in the mid 60's by a crackerjack sign painter from Cortland NY, Drew Dominiski. It was going to be a graphic response to Vickio' smart.... remarks. So how does one post pictures.

Do what Si says. I'll be able to help you with ideas once I see the wagon.

I think Vickio is going to post the wagon for me unless he's still mad. Si I tried to send it to you but it didn't go. Anyway, back to the wagon. I was stuck with the red and the yellow and the wagon owner wanted a green background. Have at it.

Practical Carriage and Wagon Painting by M. C. Hillick is a good reference book, first published in 1898 and reprinted by Astragal Press in 1997. Also Ebay is a great source for old books on any subject.

I'd like to see some photos of the actual vehicle itself, to suggest ideas & places for the lines-not old pictures in this case! The old pic doesn't really give you ideas for lines-I feel a lot was assumed to be common knowledge so was omitted from many pictures.
In that colour pic above, the word 'Butcher' would look much better in a big serifed font, I feel-with a nice big broad blended shade.
