First of all, HEY GANG! I haven't been on in a while and when I saw this I just had to share and see what you all thought.
Apparently DC Comics is revamping their logo. They did a new one that was actually pretty cool back in 2005, but I guess they think they need a new one...so here is a look of the brand as it has changed over the years:
and here is a look at the "new Logo" with all those nice bells and whistles applied....

btw Joe--I said I stand in awe, and I do--at how terrible it is. Geez! I thought that was obvious. No wonder we argue about everything else...lol

I think it's kinda neat in a way. The only other one I like is the 2005 logo. All the others were barely basic. It has a futuristic look and I like the way it seems to be adapted in different ways to maybe reflect the character in the book?
I'm not a comic book guy at all. But looking at this with an open mind, it is more fitting for our times.
Edited to add, I think it's creative the way the "D" is just a flap or layer on top of the "C" and by peeling it back just a bit, you get both letters in the same area.
The isn't much you can do with just 2 letters or initials, this one I like.

I agree with Bob. I like the way they adapted it for the different comics. Green Lantern is glowing green... Red and yellow for the flash... etc.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't the best brand in the world by a long shot. I don't even think I like it better than the old 2005 design, but it's not terrible and the 2005 brand was getting a bit dated.
I like the icon better than the way the type is laid out underneath it.

To clarify, I think the 2005 logo is my favorite. It's like many companies, trying to reinvent the wheel. Whereas Coke is consistant and timeless. Just my .02

I can't believe you Joe! Here's an "official" blurb they put out with the revamp--
"The design of the new DC Entertainment identity uses a "peel" effect – the D is strategically placed over the C with the upper right-hand portion of the D peeling back to unveil the hidden C – symbolizing the duality of the iconic characters that are present within DC Entertainment's portfolio."
You know as well as I do that any logo you have to explain is a failure. Any branding that is not instantly recognizable is a bust. Heck I am a DC fan, and I can't tell you which characters all those incarnations are supposed to represent. If an avid reader and a fanboy like me doesn't get it--how will the uninitiated new reader (that the comics industry needs so badly right now)?

If this new logo (or logos) were to work in motion on the web they are pretty cool in my view. I surmise it adapts to the particular character or property. As a logo with motion I like it (them)

I gotta go with Russ on this. Using color to rescue poor design doesn't do anyone any favors.
As a designer, how would the 2012 versions be reproduced for marketing purposes, say.... embroidered on a cap or jacket?
One problem I have with some designs is that the designer gave no thought as to how they can be reproduced faithfully be it through screen printing or embroidery. Sure they look great on the monitor, but if you're building a brand a good designer needs to keep in mind the limitations of certain production techniques. A simple test is by determining if the design works in black and white. If not, the designer might need to go back to the drawing board.

It's not really all that great or all that bad ... BUTTTTT ..... If a logo doesn't work in black and white, then it just doesn't work. I agree with Russ. Even a ****-poor logo that tranlates well in B&W is better than one you have to apply effects to so it will stand out.
Someone needs to do a quicky revamp and get the B&W effect working.
Of course as a maker of sticky stuff, the peeling vinyl effect should appeal to the sign guy in me ...

Other than the bottom left one that looks like something you might find at a Florida State Seminole game...or the all black one where the the "C" is unrecognizable...I like all the others...however without the "DC COMICS" text underneath I'm not sure I would readily recognize the "D"

They're wrong on that. It symbolizes vinyl lettering peeling off a shop window, or the plastic liner peeling off a container of cheese spread, or a piece of newspaper covering some spilled motor oil.

A sign artist would see it in that way wouldn't they? LOL
But if you think about it, a comic book fan may see it as flipping a page to the next page of a comic. So in that case it's kind of clever. I'm not a huge comic book nerd, but that is kind of what I saw it trying to represent. Then I thought about it for a second longer with the colors representing different comic heroes, then I saw it as a super hero hiding behind his or her secret identity. Like Superman ripping off his shirt to reveal his "s" icon underneath. It isn't the easiest brand to read but it is growing on me.

I think it's kinda cool, but as a stand alone logo? I wouldn't know that it stood for DC. Dan's idea of putting it in motion would be very cool. But as a stand alone logo, even if I think it's cool, it would fail to do the job. Once again, sign people can see the problems that graphic designers don't. Through my years of experience, I've noticed that they never think of production.

I don't mind the principle or idea behind the peeling logo. I think it's clever. Some tweaking is needed to help it, but it's a novel idea for something new and modern.
HOwever, it does need the DC comics below to help you figure it out. But then the golden arches M would mean zilch unless they'd spent ages associating it with the full word initially, also.

Somebody has done gone and found themselves an old timey flip-page book. Remember when they had those small books that you flipped the corners of the pages and you had moving pictures? Haven't seen one in years. Peace, Don

no matter what you think of the logo or the concept or the design, scroll back to the top of the page and take a quick look of 05 vs 12.
the dynamics of the 05 logo slap you in the face, come right off the page, much stronger than the new logo.
the new logo seems kinda static, while the old logo at least has some movement and some interesting stuff going on in the negative space around it.
not saying it's better, and I'm sure some will say the 05 logo is a bit dated, but just take a quick glance at them and see which one POPS!!! first to your eye.
ain't designing logos a real bear?

I think it looks like most of the crap that comes from "graphic artists" these days. Looks too similar to a lot of other logos to really be cool.

Michael...it's a little hard for me to give the first glance test credibility...the 05 logo is so much bigger...naturally it dominated...anyway of the 2012 logos I prefered the colored versions way more than the black and grey version juxtaposed beside the old 05.
Todd, if you had been looking at that logo from Windows instead of a Mac, I think you would have appreciated it the way it was meant to be appreciated. That's clearly a grilled cheese sandwich being peeled open!
hahahahaha
