Hiya Henry, IMHO, the best way to print translucent graphics is to do it in 2 layers and applied to a clear substrate. The base layer is printed on clear media and applied to the substrate. The second layer is printed on translucent media and carefully registered to the first. The result is a good looking graphic when viewed when rear-lit and with no internal lighting.
Havin' fun,
Checkers

Roger, You won't find me using anything else when I have to do this type of application - and I use lots of it too
Brad, Although I've never done a pan with a digital print, the only potential issue I see is working print into the curves of the pan. However, If you're somewhat skilled at wrapping a vehicle, I'm sure it can be done, perhaps by assembling the print first, then applying it.
BTW, here's a link to the PDF from 3M detailing several options for constructing back lit prints...

Checkers idea sounds like a great idea. I have printed on clear vinyl and applied to milk plex, and also printed on translucent material and applied to clear. Both work okay, but as Neil said, you get muted images. Thanks Checkers!
