The future of credit card processing. Crazy easy to use. A lot of my organizer friends are using it because it's mobile. You just use it through your iPhone, android or iPad. Fee is 2.75% for any credit card if you swipe. 3.5% plus 15 cents if you enter manually.
The biggest advantage is it's on the spot. Lettering a window? You can accept payment as soon as you finish the job. Want to take a deposit for a job as soon as they've accepted your proposal? Done.
I only learned about it through other organizers, thought you all might be interested in it.

I got my Square device a couple of weeks ago- I have the account setup (which was very easy) now I just need to find someone to pay me It will be very handy if I am at a show doing caricatures or airbrushed t-shirts, etc.
I recently did some work at our local community theater (my son was in a show, and I did the tech work on lights and sound for the show) they used the little device every night to process ticket sales and it worked great!

all it is, is a small portable magnetic strip reader that plugs into the headphone jack of the iphone- you start the app, slide the card and it reads the info, sends it to Square, then they put the funds in your account- they are just like any other credit card processing company, they take a percentage of the transaction...
not real sure how it could be "hacked"- all of the info is processed on the backend... but then again, I would not make a very good crook, because I can't think of all those dastardly ideas to rip people off...

Don't have an answer- though it seems to me, based on these videos, that it is very easy to just get someone's CC # and info using much simpler methods than trying to hack into "Square" or other CC processors that have some sort of security or tracking built in- you would think the thieves would tend to want the easiest and fastest method to perform mayhem... but I don't know

Our entire banking system uses telephone lines for ATM and credit card swipe terminal connectivity.
There was a day when you could hack into the phone network using a Cap'n Crunch whistle toy found in cereal boxes, because it produced the exact tone needed to access the system.
Food for thought on security. *Edit*: Just pointing out there will always be some new security threat as the existing ones are put to bed.
The only issue I see with Square is if you're using a device without 3G or you're out of network coverage, and there isn't some sort of Wi-Fi available, you can't process anything.
The fee structure can't be beat though, at least not for now, considering what I pay for Authorize.NET just to have access to the service even without any transactions, not to mention the merchant account.

I just signed up with Square. My barber showed me how he gets paid with credit cards using the Square app and the little plug in swiper thingy that plugs into the ear jack thingy.
But you can also type in manually the info, and you can do that instantly right after you sign up!
I was so impressed I signed up today, and was about to start a new thread about Square when I saw this.
This might put some people out of of a job selling credit card machines.

I went to the link, and it bothers me that I cannot ask a human any questions. There isn't a "contact us" icon anywhere. Did I miss anything?
I want to know the bare bones fees, How much for sky miles cards or rewards cards? How much do I pay for a credit or refund to a client. How do I print a reciept? Just curious I just hate "gotchas"

you can take a picture of the product, like a sign, and include that in the in the receipt.
Receipts are emailed to the customer.
There is no annual fee.
There is no Sign up fee.
The plug in device is free.
You can swipe a card. The fee is 2.75%
You can manually type information in. 3.5?% I think...its cheaper and faster to swipe a card.
Need a Job? Square has openings for graphic designers skilled in Illustrator and 3D animation.
Just think of how this helps people who do flea markets, garage sales, rent a bike on Daytona beach, buy something from somebody at a letterhead meet, or even get your friend to pay you back the $20.00 you loaned him!

just so we all are in the know/ This past weekend.. I saw a smart phone using the camera to scan some printed tags that went directly to the visa terminal without the usage of any ad on goody.

Nope, no signature required if you don't swipe. Charge is then 3.5% and 15 cents per transaction.
