A friend from High School hired me to make a sign for his boy turning 16. They give each child a gift at 16 that focuses on the bible. I am not the most religious person in the room at most events, but I'm far from being an atheist. So when he asked me to make something, I was honored and wanted to give it some real thought. He provided a quote and I tried to come up with a design that would extend beyond just the words. I decided that if God does indeed have works planned for us, they are varied in form and size and thus the sign should vary in form as well.
Out came the Azek sheet and after the carve was finished- it went onto the grill so that I could heat it at 350 degrees for about 5 minutes. I need a bigger grill! This piece is almost 27" long AFTER the curves!
The lettering is painted with metallic powders...I have found that I can mix them in Nova's exterior varnish and after a couple coats they really shine (not gold leaf shine..but shine none the less). The whole sign, once painted got a coat of the exterior varnish as well.

Mike, You pretty much hit it on the head. I began with a gold base coat...then worked up some glaze layers with a metallic bronze, a dark metallic brown and then highlights with a copper glaze. All techniques I picked up from Dan and keep trying to experiment with.

Doug, next time you do a cool sign, don't lean it against the wall like that. That causes them to warp all wigglely. Just lay them flat and you'll have no problem.
Too bad.... it looked like a pretty good sign before it warped.
Just keepin' it real.
Sign-cerely, Steve
