Ameriban used to sell paint ready banners. Now named Fellers (after the fella who loves to post up to 50 pictures of himself in each catalog) they have become rather insensitive to the needs of the sign people who made them wealthy in the first place. Can you tell how irritated I am about this?

I need a reliable source for enamel receptive banners with hems and grommets like Ameriban used to sell

You could buy one of the products (Ti Coat I think is one brand name) that makes a regular vinyl banner enamel receptive and apply it yourself. Eastern Banner may also still sell ready to paint banners.

Hi Steve, I hear what you're saying about Fellers. Unless you do wraps, or look like an exscaped convict, they don't cater to you.

Use the Ti-Cote, or go to Sherwin-Williams and get some SherKlear (makes a good clear coat too). Or, call Creative Banner 800-528-8846
www.CreativeBanner.com

Actually, If you prep the banner, and use a scuff pad, almost any good acrylic latex paint (satin or semi-gloss) will work as a base coat. You can try it on a piece of scrap, but it does work, and colors are endless.

The vinyl banners your talking about have been tough to find so I've used ..Ronan's Aquathane clear.. rolled on let dry paint enamel or whatever.

Has always held up great and better then Ti-Cote to me.

You could also use Ronan AquaCote and letter directly on any vinyl banner.....

I appreciate these replies and am glad to know I am not the Lone Ranger

Dale: When you say "prep the banner" are you talking about anything more than by scuffing?

And if you don't want any of the hassel of coating out the banner, you could try Best Buy Banner which is now called Big G Grafhix, Riverside, California. I am pretty sure they will still coat out/prep the banner for painting.

Steve, I usually prep it by wiping it down with "Rapid Prep" or possibly alcohol, to make sure there's no slick residue on it, before giving it a light scuffing..

Yeah, I forgot to mention Aqua Cote. I've heard lots of good things about it, but have never used it. My suppliers don't carry Ronan, and I was trying to concentrate on products that are easy to get, and still work well.

Si posted a while back that Kleer floor wax worked. "Kleer" was renamed "Future" which was renamed "Pledge with Future", anyways, it works great, goes on easily, dries almost instantly, paint sicks just fine. Get to your local supermarket before they rename it again. [Smile]

I wonder if the Krylon Fusion paint for plastic would work,
either as a base or for the color you want, (they have expanded their color selection)

These banners would be to big for Krylon Fusion I am not to keen on experimenting on customers jobs. so I better stick with proven processes
The Klee idea is interesting but i would try that on something else before doing it to a customer .

I ordered three 14 oz banners from Fellers today and they should be in on Friday so I will need to come up with a final solution by then I can not find the Ronan AquaClear locally and it would take until Tuesday to get here unless they have it in Springfield at N&F

You can easily get enamel receptive banners in many background colors through US Banner Corp via N Glantz & Son.
They have a variety of sizes as well, and the material is sturdy and good looking.
US Banner has been very kind to the Letterhead movement over the years, donating banner blanks to meets. I try to only use their products.

Jill, Glantz in Tulsa is my primary supplier and the first people I called and they told me they can get pre-made blanks in 10 oz material from US Banner but 10 oz is not adequate for free hanging applications The SignTec banners Ameriban used to sell were 14 oz which I consider minimum for any except indoor applications

Bart, I think Fellers is headquartered in Tulsa, but they have warehouses/offices in most states.

Steve, you've gotten a wealth of information on products, readily available, to paint our your banners. You don't necessarily need Aqua Cote.

I did a 3 X 18 foot banner, 3 years ago, for a customer to use at the state fair. It was a hurry-up job, so I grabbed a can of off-the-shelf satin yellow acrylic latex enamel, from the local DO-IT Hardware (their brand). Painted the banner (no primer), and did vinyl and hand painted graphics.

She used it at the fair for 10 days, then her husband folded it up, and stuck it in the attic above their business. HOT HOT HOT
Last year, she called and told me what he'd done, and said I would probably have to make her a new one.
They got it down, unfolded it, and laid it out in the sun to soften up...it was fine. Didn't even crack along where it was folded. So I know it works......cost me a damn job!!

I really hate to ask this on a board where we all grew up hand-lettering banners, but why are you still hand-lettering banners? I can lay out something I would never be able to paint, e-mail it to a wholesale printer, and have it in my hands in two days. 14ounce material, double-sided, hemmed and grommeted, gradients, bevels, multi-color, photographs, whatever, for $2.50 a square foot.

Sorry, just wonderin'.........

Sonny,

The answer to your question is the same answer Mr. T gave when asked why he wore all that
gold.

BECAUSE I CAN!

I love to paint stuff and I don't give a dang about the money part.

I grow tomatoes that probably cost me twice what I would pay at the grocery store. They don't even look as pretty.

You're right Sonny; your way's quicker....but...

I still love to paint too, and I try never to lay out something that I can't paint.

Not an everyday occurrence, but I've had problems from online printers before, and this way, I know who's doing it, and possibly it'll turn out right.

I picked up the banners today and will probably coat them out with Kilz Premium primer with a top coat of enamel in a color blend then do the lettering.

Due to this post I stopped along the way and shot pictures of a 6'x12' faded banner which I hand lettered on 14 oz SignTec Material which came from Ameriban. It is still in good enough shape to repaint. I hung it 9 years ago. I will post pictures of it when I have time and use it as a reference when my customers tell me they were told by the vinyl shops the vinyl letters outlast paint

I am Curious,, Has anyone tried using Banner off a roll of Digital print ready Banner material.. It would seem to me if it is preped for Ink it would also work for Paint.

I buy the digital print stuff from Grimco for down and dirty Sticky Banners and just hem and Grommet them myself as it is Way Cheaper to buy a roll of material then pre-mades.

Also I found out for a quick and easy hem that's much stronger then DS Tape is I use Clear PVC Pipe glue. Fold the banner then take and swab the glue down the seam. 3 minutes later.. Bullet proof hem. Careful on Printed banners though as the Glue will eat the Ink.
