I thought we weren't supposed to talk about politics or religion at the dinner table. As far as Gov waste, just don't add to it. Don't rely on the Gov to suport you in any way. Vote no on anything that'd cost money. Don't break any laws, it cost money on both sides.

Here's a letter I sent to the Calif DMV today:
DMV:
Enclosed are copies of your latest Registration Renewal Notice and a Special Notice saying that you will no longer send these after July 1, 2011.
I have some questions: If you dont send a notice, how is one to know how much money you want? If I just take a guess and send you a check for the amount, how will you know what vehicle it is for? Simply from my name and address imprinted on the check? ------- And I just remembered: If the car is due for smogging, I think I need to show their notice to the smog station. I'll have to write them again about that.

My favorite of many- The County I reside in also has a development arm that has an industrial park close to the small airport here. They decided that it was time to fix up the place with new signs. There was a divided entrance with a small internally lit aluminum monument sign. They wanted to replace it with a VERY nice stone monument with a large white marble sign imbedded. Get this, the county required a permit from...the county. The county road department wanted an impact study and eventually had lawyers involved to make sure they could put a sign in that median (never mind there had been one there since the road opened)- the way it finally ended up was that the county required an indemnification agreement between the county and the county so the county would not hold the county responsible in the case of some sort of lawsuit in the future. This took four departments and a few lawyers two months. These people talked with straight faces about the whole thing...amazing.

Here another good one from a local municipality. I own a commercial lot in a neighboring town and one year they did not send me a property tax bill, therefore I didnt pay it. I got a late notice my property would go for sale on the steps, blah , blah, blah!
I called and the lady told me that sending those notices out was a priviledge and they dont have to send notices. REALLY! so amongst other things in life I have to remember the date to send this property tax in and I guess I'll have to call and see if it went up from the previous year.
Absolutely NO common sense. they say the stupidest things I've ever heard. I bet the 2nd line of a city county application asks if you can get thru the day on 1/64th of your brain cells

Last month I got a notice from our city that our home was not in compliance with a standard maintenance ordinance of the city and that if corrections were not made by the 15th that the city would be forced to make the changes and charge me the going rate for the corrections.
No where in the letter did it say what the ordinance said or how I had violated it. So, I call the city and they say I have to have my street address on the house so that it is visible from the street. Never mind that it is on the mail box in Scotchlite and also painted on the curb and I've lived there for 35 years. They say that if I do not comply that they will have a city employee come out and place the numbers on my house and I will be charged for the expense.
Well, I did nothing and then received another letter from the city on the 16th thanking me for complying with the ordinance.
And I have to pay their salary.

Grrr....this is the kind of nonsense I mean.......
quote:Mark Grapin thought his two sons would love the treehouse.
He called Fairfax County before starting to find out the rules for the Broyhill Park neighborhood in the Falls Church area of the county.
"The guy in building permits laughed me off the phone," Grapin says. He was told it's a treehouse and not built to any code.
So Grapin went to the local home improvement store, bought $1,400 worth of supplies and spent six weekends building the treehouse.
It has red clapboard siding, shingles, a slide, a pull-down ladder, two climbing ropes, closed windows and shutters.
It is wrapped around the tree but stands free, not touching the tree. It stands to the side of his house.
Grapin says his immediate neighbors had no complaints, but someone did complain anonymously to Fairfax County.
Grapin was told he had to treat it like an addition to his house and get a zoning variance. He spent more than $1,800 getting the proper forms and going through a hearing.

The chief inspector in the town I live in had a plaque on his desk that read: "What Does the Code Say?"
He had me change it to: "Common Sense, Not Code Sense"
Too many inspectors were code zealots, looking for trouble and violations rather than recognizing most people were within the spirit of the law, if not every letter of it.
In one town city around here, the inspection department was unusually helpful. I commented on that to the head of building inspections and he told me: "We haven't forgotten our official title is 'Public Servant'." Unfortunately, too many have amnesia on that issue.
