I need my site optimized to get up higher on the lists. Seems like 9 out of 10 phone call are selling this. How much should one pay to have this done for you? I'm not into spending any time on chat, blogs, face, twitter, etc.

Not sure John but I hear there are many scams in that field. One article I read claimed there is no way for a company to guarantee you to be on the first page unless you buy into a google ad, those on the right side of the standard search results. I've heard that having your site linked from other sites helps. But I'm interested as well in this topic since I plan on building my own site soon.

When I paid Yellow Pages.com for a premium add, ($72) a month and a free yellow page box add, I got quite a few email requests. This only lasted for about 2 months, then nothing. I didn't want my web site full of text, just some pictures. Now "They" say it has to contain all kinds of words to get hits.

Can tell ya worked for me, I'm not a web savvy tech, in fact using the hosts web builder.
What I've done is find FREE hosts and made up web sites that pertain to my town that people would use to search for .. like... pinstriping in Orlando.
Also sure this helped but made some of them my domain name also ..like...pinstriping in Orlando. com after getting about 12 others I directed most to one domain my 592sign.
If you look on a phone for 582sign it comes up on several places, so I guess it worked. Cause I now sell most of my new work by internet searches.
Making a "Google Places Page" helped get our website towards the top of the list.
It's pretty simple (took me about 30 minutes),and it's free! Below is a link to more information. There is even a quick "tour" to help you get started.
Another important step is letting the major search engine companies (google, yahoo, bing, etc.) know that your website exists.
This is typically called "submiting your url".
This should help get your website quite a bit higher on the search results list. Don't expect that your ranking will change overnight though, as it does take a few weeks(maybe even a month)for those big companies to receive & process your submission.
Below is a link to a helpful article that explains how to go about doing it.
I've submited our website url to google only, and it seemed to make quite a difference. Need to carve out some time to submit to the other big players.

You can hide text if it's the same color as the background. Another thing is meta tags. These are key words you put in the script for search engines to recognize. I think you can submit your website to google somehow and they put it in their engine or something. This is still something I need to do. It does help to have other sites linked to yours too.
