"Can you give a quote on doing a sign with our logo?" is what the email said. I don't know where to start. Shall I go for the dough, give the quote, get the cash, deposit the check, and treat my husband to a nice seaside dinner? Or,,shall I go into my speall about layout, color, visual perception to prospective clients.?

Now that I look at it again,,I see something coming out of the man's body on the right and why is that lady, on the left, scratching herself on the top of the "F"?

"go for the dough, give the quote, get the cash, deposit the check"
If that's what they want, give it to them.
Think business and not asthetics.
Successful business beats starving artist any day!
Spend the dough on trips to walldog events!!!

I would ask if they would like to update their image. I would explain in an email how their logo is crap, without using those words, but with Mike Steven's terminology. This has worked about 50% of the time for me. When it does work, you will have a loyal customer. If it doesn't, I let it slide. So when people ask, "Who did that?", your name doesn't come up.
Cheap looking logos often come from cheap cusotmers and generate cheap referrals!

Do the sign and after you get paid present them with some "While I was just thinking" ideas about it. Smile and wave...all the way to the paint supply house to buy some more One Shot.
I just did a sign for a note lot who wanted some 19 word expression that basically just said "Your honesty equals credit-ability" It was a long wall. So long, I can't even remember what it said, but after I did it, I simplified it to "Honesty = Credit" and sold them five more for inside their small offices. "We can either take the long way around or the shortcut...which way you want, Mr. Customer? You say both? OK."

Wow, it's even trademarked. Sometimes the customer is just not educated on what is good. Educate them.

The figures give the idea that this is an artistic dance center, not just Arthur Murray stuff. I'd guess they're lousy artists and shd not be given a classy logo to mislead people. This one is probably very suitable for them.

Okay, I sent the lady back an email stating my opinion on her logo. I did it in a nice professional manner. I also gave her a price on producing the sign in vinyl, on DiBond as she requested. The reason why she knew about DiBond is because I did the sign next to her business, in which I used DiBond. As she said, "I'm just getting prices from different places". If I ever meet her, I'm gonna have do to my best periot, just like a ballerina.

That's really really...really really really ugly...at least the 2 female figures are in dance poses but what's the guy standing on his head for...maybe they teach break dancing there...something had to be said about how poor the design was and that it could be improved on...sounds like you handled it well.

My first thought is that someone put a lot of work* into this, and NO WAY are they going to drop it easily. . . . *from their perspective.
