There are more than a hundred, and there will be many more. Jon Butterworth asks for a book to be done. It would be interesting to see what most of you who know me think the value of one well done recently would be. My thoughts are depending the difficulty of each, about between 2 to 3 hundred. Bill

Bill, I think that possibly you're setting the bar just a tad low. Your portraits are unique, and that being said, I think that a good starting point would be $500.00 and upward from there, depending upon the degree of difficulty, and the time required to complete one to your satisfaction. You have a talent that very few can match, and that alone has value.
I can recall many times, folks entering the field of signwriting being overly cautious about the prices they were willing to charge, and quite often undervalueing their work. Over the years, I'm certain that you've also had similar observations. Many times the veterans have counselled that if you don't ask for it, you'll never get it. I feel that the same advice applies here. People also tend to respect more, the things that they've paid more for. In this disposable, throw-away society, you're offering something of significant value, that not many can duplicate. Please make sure that you're well compensated for what you're providing.
PS: I'm a great fan of all of those past portraits of yours that I've seen.

I cannot offer a price but will say that your paintings are unique to the fact that from what I've seen, you capture the intensity of one's personality..

As others have said, Bill, your portraits are unique in that they were done by YOU - which puts their value to the face in them a hundred times higher than this adding a dollar value to your timesheet.
They are also wonderfully executed- whether prints or originals! $2-300 seems too cheapish to me for your specific work- but would someone who was not the subject of one, want one of them...that's difficult to say.

Bill, would you like that picture of me you asked for from when we first met and I had a full head of black hair or now with just a gray fringe? With the RedGreen hat or without? Did you give Jay the original just for " out of sight out of mind" purposes? and did it work? millions need to know that sounds too cheap to me, but not yet!

Bill, I'm fond of animal paintings, and watercolours, and this gal is one of my absolute favs. http://www.rachaelrossman.com/ I would love to do work like hers.
On her site, at the bottom you'll see in small letters "store" along the menu line. Click on it and you'll see some of her pricing.
She has an etsy store, and that is something I would suggest to you too. I have many artist friends doing well on Etsy.
Would love to see you getting your work out there! They are wonderful portraits, and it seems like they are something your really enjoy doing.
I love mine!

I remember seeing a bunch of Bill's portraits a while back...someone posted a link that I went to but I cant seem to find it now...I would enjoy seeing them again if someone could direct me to the right place I would appreciate it...I'm not one to know about pricing portraits but $200 to $300 sounds like only a beginning price to me.

I think Mr. Pickett has a good starting point only I would add about a dollar an hour for every year of experience on top of the original $125 an hr he suggests,...that should bring it up to a reasonable amount to add an actual value to your time Bill,....You have a God given blessing and it would be a sin to sell such a wonderful gift short of its true value,...which considering the source of the gift and the time and effort you personally have added over the years should bring it somewhere near a reasonable value for a priceless gift and a timeless effort,....just my humble opinion here,...an old timer once told me you can always lower your price but its hard as hell to raise it once you've started the negotiations,...

Bill, Make 'em $99.95 and they'll sell like hot cakes! Just kidding... how can you really put a price on a portrait, especially a "one-of-a-kind" piece. But if you have to have a figure, I wouldn't start any lower than $300. You've earned it and can produce many expamples of your talent. That seems like a fair price. You can always charge more for a larger size or if there is more than one person in the painting.
Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be a steal.
Sign-cerely, Steve

Pete, ya' scurvy dog . . . he didn't give me an original - so NO, not 'out of sight out of mind' . . . I need to track you down and harass you in person again . . . I'm too easy of a target . . .
But surely some must know someone who DOES have an original . . .
But a rarity.

The original belongs to Jay's wife Jody, at the time she was not involved in sign work. I want to thank everyone for all the input and very nice words, I really appreciate it. Bill

Pete Payne, only the one photo that you really like, is the one you should send. It would be a big help if it is sharp, not out of focus. A close up is helpful too, not a group shot.
If anyone does not know how to see the collection of portraits, just click on Letterhead Profiles and then click on portraits. The Shortreeds are very kind to post all of them for several years. The latest is Dale and Brenda Manor from their wedding in Plymouth. Bill

I think what I would do is charge by the hour. Pick a price not that you think you are worth but what you are REALLY worth. Think about how busy you want to get with it. Because that is really important. And then charge double what the market will bear and see if it flies. You can always come down. (have a sale!) But its harder to go up. Then remember us peasants when you are flying across the water on your yacht. OK? And tell Rondi to wear sunscreen with her hat, that water reflection can get viscious.

Bill the master at all levels of the fine arts. I've seen this man carve, sculpt marble, letter, paint, gild & do teriffic faux finishes. A true renaissance man. Charge like you don't need the money, & what I mean by that is Alot! You've earned it.
