I would say charge for your time. There is no set figure. I usually do colored pastel portraits for around $200 but then again, how big, how detailed, what do you have as a source to work from?? Do you frame them or do they? Quote high and tell them if it takes you less time than you thought, it will be less. That's what I do.

One of the big factors is how good are you? Some artists may demand thousands for a pencil portrait while others' work may be worth less than the cost of the paper and pencil.
Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. What do you think it's worth? Then that's the price. If the client agrees with you, they'll pay it; if not, they won't. I wouldn't suggest that you just accept whatever the client says that they will pay. That may not be what it's worth.
Not any help, am I?

If I were going to do this, I would go to www.wetcanvas.com - the best art site on the net in my opinion - and check out the "Drawing and Sketching" and the "Portraiture" sections. Then I would look at people who are showing work comparable to mine. Lots of them will have websites, and those sites will likely have pricing for their work. That would give me a good idea of where to start.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

I have a personal friend who does portraits in many different mediums and makes big bucks off her work. It's not to hard to recognize her popularity,so this determins the price she charges. Most people do not want to display something cheap on wall to brag and fish for praise of what gorgious work it is.People don't get excited about cheap artwork or ornamental flea market crap on the wall. The more they pay...the prouder they are of it.This lady I speak of has made portraits of many famous people even the queen of England. The last time I had lunch with her,she had just finished a portrait of Billy Bush's children.I would say your popularity and the financial factor of the person you deal with should have bearing on the price you charge.Treat your artwork like you are a heart surgeon..Nobody wants a cheap one..they want THE BEST!
