My customers design will go on the exterior of a glass business window. Faces north. Any specific brand Mylar or vinyl that would be mirror like gold that will stand up for 3 -5 years? And should I edge seal it (thinking to do so especially if Mylar)? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Hi Mick. Most gold mylars aren't really gold at all. They're basically silver with a transparent gold varnish, which gives the gold effect. Unfortunately, this varnish is very seceptable to fading from UV exposuer, and what was once gold reverts to silver. I would explain this to your customer beforehand, and stress that this fading will occur....nothing you can do to prevent this.
However, you can give the option of using SignGold, which is more expensive, but will hold up for about 10 years. The difference is that SignGold is real 23kt gold behind a tedlar film. You can cut it and apply it like the gold mylar he's asking for, but unlike the mylar version, it won't fade away.
Hope this helps you out.

I did metal letters about 18 years ago with gold mirror arlon vinyl, I cleared the letters with express clear, an automotive product, it protected the gold the entire time... with out a clear the gold will fade in just a few months.

There was a product that our suppliers no longer sells because too much complaint of tunneling, but it was gold on both sides and seemed to hold up well for cheap window work.

Tunneling is when the material comes loose from the backing and puckers. Really bad to happen with the mylar material when it comes off the roll. I usually cut off enough to feed through the cutter, and sometimes have to lift it from the backing and squeegee it back down before cutting. It's a pain.

That tunneling does not happen with the "R" stuff. Never knew what it was called before. We have a lot of Blacktoppers in this area seem to be into the mirror vinyl. So we do quite a few trucks.
