I'm not tryiing to rag on anyone, but I've noticed recently a few links to other boards. I don't think it's fair to Steve & Barb , or that the same situation in reverse would be fair to the admin of any other forum.
May I suggest sending a PM in a situation like this?
I'm on a CNC board that's basically specific to one manufacturer ( although not administerd by them) & we make a point of not publicly discussing other manufacturer's machines, at least not by name. This is simply common courtesy.

Well, we didnt learn no manners I guess where I grew up, so can yall tell me what's the problem with linking to another board? And what's a PM. besides a Prime Minister? And why shdnt people discuss any machine they want? How else you going to learn about them?

Dennis, I'd think that publicly steering people to other boards would be akin to standing in front of Home Depot giving out Lowes flyers. "PM" is a private message..... the 3rd little "envelope" icon at the top of a post. People are going to find other boards anyway but we shouldn't be openly promoting them here ... this place is Steve's & Barb's livelihood.
Regarding the CNC forum I mentioned ... there's at least one forum where any & all machines & software are discussed. Some of the manufacturers have forums that are more or less dedicated to their products & it's those where we typically refrain from discussing competitor's machines. All are welcome there but they're intended solely for owners & prospective owners of the brand. These forums will gladly & publicly steer you to the forums that aren't based on any one manufacturer.

I wouldn't start a thread to direct discussions elsewhere, but I found out about this forum from another forum, and I've been here ten years as a result. The other forum I go to less than once a month... but I found that one from another forum that I've never returned to because they weren't worth returning to.. AND they had the localism attitude that frowned on the open exchange of information if it included an awareness of the world outside their little party. (that party folded loooong ago by the way)
The Lowes/HD flyer analogy works if someone starts a thread to steer traffic elsewhere..
...but if I support Home Depot with my dollars, but also talk shop with other supporters/customers... amd I learn that Lowe's Valspar line offer's something I need, that HD's Behr brand isn't offering.. well, both stores are there because of US... the paying customers... and in this social media world, loyalty comes from choice, not from restriction

Doug, you have a valid point. I still think it's improper, however. You're absolutely correct that loyalty comes by choice & not restriction. It's no secret that other forums exist & I don't see any problem with mentioning you saw something there ...... it's the "link" that I feel is unfair to the Shortreeds. We'll probably just have to agree to disagree on this one.

I've mentioned other forums here many times- in answer to a question, and I have mentioned Letterville, in response to a question on another forum or more- each was, in my opinion, appropriate for the question given.
It does not mean any disloyalty to anyone.
What really irks me is forums which prohibit or appear to censor certain expressions of opinion or links to certain off-forum webistes, like for instance, prohibiting you from listing your own website in your signature, or from stating that you can do something unless specifically asked first if you can...
I guess it's just culture differences too-I am ALWAYS in favour of respectful courtesies, but am wary of the environment of forced or gagged ones. Perhaps that's the Aussie in me!
Having said all that, I'm not aware of the occasion which prompted Rodger's original post.
As for CNC forums, I've participated in four that I can think of offhand. Each has its merits, and its fallibilities, depending on whether you are answering a question to help someone, or needing help yourself, and whether that help is mechanical, electronic, software, or design-related help. I haven't seen one forum that is best at all fields, but each has its forte, and I felt at the time it was appropriate to direct someone to do a search in an area where I felt they'd do a better chance to get the answer they were seeking, even if it was at a different URL.
There was still the invitation to have it answered on that site, but it had not happened.

Good discussion Rodger, and others... I'm glad my views aren't too far out to be understood...
And I confess, I missed that it was the links being brought in question, but I see that now...
Well, I think identifying a site without an actual link is a good compromise, and I think that is quite possibly as far as Steve and Barb would want to go with this courtesy too (although I'd rather hear this from them

There have been times the link thing has been annoying over the past 15 years, but it's not links to sign websites. Letterville has always been dedicated to the Letterhead Movement. It changed our lives. It bothers me that we get compared to websites about signs In my mind, there is a huge difference.
Let's face it. There are all sorts of people here in Letterville that have no understanding of what Letterheads was in it's prime. It was the 70's. I was so excited to find an occupation where you could support a Family out of a "magic" box full of paint and brushes. It all seemed so romantic.
Then I discovered a bunch of hippies that shared my passion. They also believed in sharing what they knew for free. People traveled thousands of miles on their own dime and actually paid to teach their secrets to people like myself desperate for anything that could improve my work. Letterhead work was winning all the sign compeditions and I dreamed of being one of them.
It's early morning here and I really don't mean to ramble on. This website was created to do our small part to preserve the best of what a sign painter was all about. We lettered by hand, knew how to work with goldleaf and paint signs on walls. It truly was a craft that took years to learn. Remember showcards? I loved that part of the trade even though that part of the trade was in it's last days.
The only thing better than the free education was hanging out with other Letterheads at Letterhead Meets all over the Country and then the World. Letterville has tried to document as many as these live meets as possible for future generations. I think we are close to 80 meets. The step by steps and other features were just a bonus. Truth is the BullBoard quickly became your favorite stop and the other good stuff often goes unnoticed.
I'll be the first to admit we probally are not the best sign website. Somedays I wonder if the Letterheads us oldtimers remember with so much affection is still relevent.
Barb still answers the website phone 24/7. She still spends hours and hours everyday updating meets and making sure all the Future Letterhead and Pinhead meets are promoted. I'm not as involved as I once was. Most days I just feel worn out and useless. It hurts not to be able to give it my best and help Barb more.
For years I have been putting off a talk with all of you about Letterheads and the future of Letterville. Has the music died?
Just an old fart's thoughts at 3am. I know I should have stopped typing several paragraphs back.

Let's all be respectful and go home with who brought us to the dance. Let's just be sure to have some fun while we're all dancing together. I heard about a book in which a society was base upon this premise. Try not to offend, try not to be too easily offended. I frequent at least 3 forums and am a co-administrator of one of them. All have their own spirit. Pick, choose even blend. If in doubt about the propriety of an endorsement PM's are a wise move. My highest regards to Steve and Barb and anyone else who sticks their neck out for a dream. I appreciate you.

Well said Bob. Sharing information with friends is what this is all about. Steve and Barb do an excellent job here. Lighten up and enjoy each others company while we are still above ground.
