I'm sure I've asked and done this before....but I'm getting older and my mind can't find the info. Can I clear 1-Shot with an automotive clearcoat and if so how long do I have to wait for the 1-Shot to dry. Do I apply a couple of light mist coats followed by a couple of heavier coats?

Be VERY careful. I've seen what happens when you do it wrong, too much, too soon, and it's NOT pretty to have to remove it all and start over!

Yes, you can clear coat One Shot with automotive clears....BUT....there are so many factors that can go wrong, why take the chance? Buy some HOK or DuPont lettering urethane and be done with it. You won't have to use the catalyst.Yes they are more expensive than One Shot but like Jane pointed out, a redo is NOT pretty, and will more than pay for the extra cost of the urethanes.

I've clear coated over 1-shot (with and without hardener added) a day after painting and had no I'll effects. I use whatever they are selling at NAPA for clear and it works fine.

I have used HOK striping urethane and catalized One Shot for years with virtually no problems. Just let it dry over night, then two light coats followed by a couple medium wet coats. The clear should be sticky to the touch but not stringy when you pull your finger away, before applying another coat.
Even the HOK urethanes can be a problem if the person spraying the clear does not wait long enough before applying the clear or lays it on too heavy too soon.
I had the job from hell.... striped the car in orange and metallic gold HOK .... amateur painter.... cheap materials ( never heard of the brand ) Some areas were fine and others the metallic in the gold mixed into the clear and ran. He repainted those areas... I striped it with hardener in the HOK, and he still managed to screw up some of it....
Lesson learned... don't work with amateur painters !

This is for a couple of 8'x 8'highway billboards, There is the back end of a classic car spanning the width as well as a 8-12" border of colour. My problem isn't so much the cost of anything but the availability. Although not absolutely neccessary, it would be nice to have the signs up this weekend as there is a centennial celebration in the town. My clients words were "If you can't get them up it's OK, I know you'll try." I planned on airbrushing the car with Auto Air, I'm not sure I have enough to do the border though. I guess I can always mask off the 1-shot and not clear that portion.

This is my method. 1-Shot mixed with a bit of the same hardener that will be used in the clearcoat. This way the clear will reconize it's own hardener and not attack it. And the person who clears it, has got to fog it a bit so the paint can get slightly accquinted to the 1-Shot. Once they make friends, lay it on. WARNING!!! Bright Red or vermillion might bleed a bit. Wave a dead chicken over it and throw some salt over your shoulder. I've had people clear 1-Shot striping/lettering right after I leave their shop. Makes me thank the Lord for His grace that nothing bad really happened.
