Today was the first day of concrete work on the pub fireplace/sign. The worksite is in a bit of a frenzy with dry wallers, carpenters, electricians and other trades all in the same space so we retreated to the new restaurant area and cleared some space for our crew to work. I had worked on Saturday with the welding of the lower portions of the trees - as far as I could go before interfering with the drywall crew. Today we mudded and carved the first section of the fireplace. The mantle was routed from multiple pieces of 30 lb Precision Board, assembled in the shop and them mounted in position. We are sculpting the trees around it and the fireplace.
As I worked the tree and roots came together quickly - a couple hours to apply the cement and about the same time to carve it to shape. As I stood back to look it make me laugh out loud... it's one of the coolest signs I have done. I have to sell Janis on the idea of including something similar into our new house!

The pub owners are great folks. The pub construction project was well underway when I was contacted. They had been following my blog on my website for some time, but were a little apprehensive to approach me as they worried I might just bust their budget. The preliminary meetings went well, they LOVED my ideas which fit into their own vision. We negotiated a final price, with them taking every single concept I presented. And yes we did stretch their budget significantly. The end result will be a mind blower of a project... our very best yet.
As they handed me my hefty deposit check they said there was one more thing... Anytime we were working on site all meals and drinks (non-alcoholic) were on the house. It has proved to be a huge bonus. The meals are wonderfully delicious with large portions. The menu is varied and there are daily specials to mix it up. I and my crew will not be starving artists on this project by any means!
The grand opening celebration is set for the third week in October... should be fun! In the meantime there is lots of work to be done!

Way to go Dan! I was hoping you would post more photos of your progress. The fireplace is incredible with the sculpted trees and the carved mantle. I'm sure the owners will think they got more than they bargained for.
I can't wait to see what it will look like after it is all painted because it looks amazing now.
Sign-cerely, Steve

Be careful Dan, someone is likely to find out that somewhere there is a law against getting paid for having so much fun. I admire your talent very much. Peace, Don
