Looking to buy something like a nikon d60 secondhand which will be mainly for hobby type use. Have followed a few on ebay bur prices soar on last day of auctions of course. Would prefer to find a reputable on line store selling this type of gear. Have any of you any suggestions please

Kevin, Try Nikonians.org. You may find someone local and the group has been top drawer from what I've seen participating in transactions. Also a good place to get a feel for used model prices from people who tak e care of their gear.

the main thing about buying secondhand is knowing how many images have been processed-if I had to do it over, I would just get a new one- I acquired a Nikon D100, an older model which really struggles in low light- it takes great shots, but I'm starting to get dead pixels- too many shots taken before I got it...

Kevin, I suggest the opposite. Unless you already have a really good camera, get the best you can afford. You may find it becomes MUCH more than just a hobby.
Nikon D3100, came with two lenses, under $1000 new. I wish I could have afforded even better, but this will suffice for now. Magazines love me anyway.
