Just wanted to get some input on adding Color to your size for Slow & Fast. Do you think it affects the end result ?

It will speed up the tack time if you add too much.
If you want a solid color behind the gold ... use full strength 1Shot and let it dry, then add just enough 1Shot to the size so that it is just so that you can see it. It will help you lay on an even coat since you cans see how thick that you are applying it.

HI Kevin, I would use japan color to speed the drying and enamel or oil color to slow it down. Like Si says, use only enough to be able to see that you leave no holidays. Bill

If your're wondering how much too add? Just about 1/2 teaspoon to an ounce of size. That's oil based size. I'm not sure about the water based sizes like Wunda or Aqua size.

Thanks for the input. Has anyone tried the New Lefranc Slow size? We have some of the Old left, but figured I would ask for any input about the new.

I have been using it for quite a while. The first difference you will see is that it is lighter in color. It still works well, except sometimes it is a little quicker. You will have to check it out to make sure it is just right for guilding. Bill

and don't use it over latex or acrylic without a barrier of enamel between, something about the size and latex/acrylic don't get along and the size will get continually harder until it lets go of the gold

I always used a coat of one shot between latex and size to prevent fish eyes in the slow size so I never noticed a change, but around the time of the reformulation, and as far as I know only over latex and acrylic the slow size would continue to harden and begin to let go of the gold and the size would remain on the surface. Gary Anderson first pointed it out to me because he uses all water base except for size. The barrier coat seems to do the trick. I have also heard of some using ti-coat or enamel coat for banners, but haven't tried that myself

Then I would assume I could use 1 shot over the waterbased primer & Guild. No need to put Latex over the Primer, then 1 shot then Size. Does this seem right?
