I'm working on a 5x4 sandblasted/carved sign that will be between 2 posts. Will be sandwiching
1x2 inch tubing between 2 1.5 inch pieces of
precision board extending from the ends for
mounting.I've always used gorilla type glues but
have some MAS epoxy here I would like to try.
Do I coat the entire back sides of each before
clamping together or do it in strips like gorilla glue? The gorilla glue works o.k. but it
would be nice not having to stack every heavy object in the shop on top of the sign to prevent
the expansion of the glue.

Also, do you wet the surface first with the epoxy and has anyone had any luck coating the
exterior of the sign with epoxy. I was thinking
of maybe just coating the edges with it.

Bill, I don't think you'll have to coat the entire back; strips should be fine. I'd particularly go with strips above and below where the tubing goes thru. Then, maybe some random 'blops' to help hold the mid-section together. I would, just for the best bond, put some weight on it, for awhile, til the glue sets.

And NO, you don't wet the board first, with epoxy.

Don't waste the epoxy, strips are fine. I go around the perimeter and run a 4" wide strip every 8 to 12 inches.

I also wouldn't waste the extra steel. I've found 1" square tube is plenty strong enough. And, with one inch tube, a 3/4 inch solid round tube fits perfectly inside square tube. Just weld a flange on the end of the round tube, insert them into the square tube.. easy between pole install.
