Hennie wrote the following on Joe's facebook page:
quote: Joe is in the cardiac critical care unit at Sacred Heart Hospital . When I spoke with the cardiologist this morning he said the prognosis is not good. The heart attack damaged his heart badly. Joe has a balloon pump helping his heart to pump the blood to give his heart a rest. He is on a ventilator and lots of drugs. They have h...is hands & feet bound to keep him from trying to pull out the tubes. We did find out today that he was only unconscious for a minute or two, so no brain damage. During the midway vivit he was able to open his eyes and acknowledge people. He was getting a bit frustrated because the tube wouldn't allow him to talk. He would mouth the words water & I can't breathe. They are keeping him pretty sedated . I am going to try & see the Dr. tomorrow morning. I am going to bed now; I didn't get much sleep last night in the hospital waiting room.

Hennie (and others) met with Dr. little while ago: Heres the bottom line, 1) Only 50% chance he'll "leave hospital" 2)Theres nothing available right now in medical field that can/will "fix" heart damage, Doc says stem cell procedures still "10 years down the road". Hennie is of the opinion they don't consider Joe "good candidate fro heart transplant. 3)Sometime within next 48 hours they will attempt to "wean" him off ventilator and will do same with the "heart pump" a little later than that.
They will remove restraints tomorrow IF Joe ceases being combative. (He's SO combative BECAUSE they have arms/legs bound. He can't TALK cuz of ventilator, but he DOES want to have ability to AT LEAST WRITE. Any/all of you that know Joe,... KNOW that talking/communicating is probably what he enjoys/does BEST!!lol) 5) IF he "continues to improve" will be moved to a room in a few days; still ICU/CCU until then. Think thats about it......except, last but not least, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for your love, support and "prayers" Hennie will prob be on later( tonight) to write update. I'M sending big hugs to each of you whoever/wherever you are:)

same here.. except that we've met at a Dixie meet, spoke on the phone, and taken up arms together in many taboo political sparring sessions... but for a guy i know 99% from the internet... this is one of the most precarious life-in-balance interludes in my life & I can't stop thinking & praying for him and his family either...
Joe is improving. The cardiologist said they are going to try and remove the balloon that's helping his heart pump tomorrow. Then they plan to begin weening him off the ventilator in a day or two. They have the reduced the number of his meds. Althoug...h, when I went to see him at 5:00 they had sedated him more because he became agitated; I told the nurse maybe if they release the restraints he may not be so frustrated. I was talking with Traci and we were thinking that we need to tell him what is going on. I know the Drs' & nurses talk about him, but don't know if they talk to him. I am going to ask that they tell him what and why they are doing what they do. Going to get ready and go back up. The next visiting hours are 8:30 - 9:30.
Hennies asks.. Please keep the prayers going. Joe knows about us posting about the prayers and the positive energy flowing from within here at the sign forums. He seems to need it.

I've been praying for Joe a lot, asking for God's will be done.
My biggest prayers now are, if he survives, may he be able to have a quality of life, to be able to do for himself, and not be a burden to Hennie and to himself.
Having met and talked to him, I don't believe he'd want that either.

he has a fever now. This is likely a complication of the heart damage. The immune system finds those damages /dead cells and reacts to them via a fever. They will treat it.

Hey Joey - this Joe's sis in law, I havent posted morning update, want to wait and see if Hennie will have chance to. You can pass the word things are now cautiously optimistic. They disconnected machine "pumping" for his heart and his heart apparently doing job on its own> Doc even mention the "possibitty" of putting a defibrillator in his chest IF he continues to improve. ...prognosis still 50-50 , I think....Hell - Dr's are just PRACTICING medicine, anyway!

OK. I'm going to start from the the beginning about Joe. I came home from church on Sunday, 4/17/11. Joe & I had breakfast on the patio and we were enjoying the beautiful day. He set the sprinklers to water the citrus and said he was going to go to the bank to make a deposit and come right back. I received a call at 4:28 from Deputy Hernandez who called from Joe's phone.
He said that Joe had been in a minor traffic incident and had passed out. The
emt's were taking him to Sacred Heart. I said I'm on my way. So I hung up the phone and went to the hospital. They had him as a "john doe"; his wallet was in his pocket;don't know why they didn't look there. They took me back to the Family Room to wait. The ER doctor came back and told me he was critically ill,
that he had a heart attack , was unconscious & they didn't know how long he was out and his lungs were filling with fluid & that I should call in the family. He said they were an MRI then sending him up to Critical Care. I called Nancy & she came up and I called Rev. Jamie to get Joe on the prayer list. While he was having the MRI, Deputy TI Hernandez came out to speak with me. He said that when he arrived on the scene, Joe was up against the fence at a house on Denver Ave and didn't have a pulse. He called a deputy with a defibulator and they shocked him and performed cpr, and got a pulse back, then the EMT's showed up and took over and he called me. He said that Joe was in his truck talking to a pedestrian and a man in white car threw a bottle at the man Joe was talking to.The white car pulled up in front of Joe and Joe bumped his car with his truck. No report was filed because there was no damage to either vehicle. The MRI didn't reveal a stroke or anything bad in his brain. So I went up to the Critical Care waiting room. (It's 6:00- I woke up a little after 4) gotta get ready to go back up to the hospital.

I looked Joe up when I was in Pensacola a few years ago. He showed me his ice cream truck (shop on wheels). In actuality, it was a piece of ingenuity. The 'crooked building' wasn't under construction then and, yes, we all know the building isn't really crooked I enjoyed the friendly banter online but, even more, meeting him in person.
You hang in there, Joe, the best is yet to come. May God bless you in a special way. Sending prayers.
