I am involved with the restoration of an 1883 West Shore Railroad station here on the Hudson River. Presently, we are involved with removing the old finishes on the interior passenger bench. After we stain, I would like to put a clear finish of several coats. All suggestions are encouraged from this board.

I don't know jerry; I agree that marine spar varnish is very good. In fact, a good buddy of mine has a shop that restores antique Chris-Craft-type boats and they use Captain's Varnish.
That said, it yellows; and they do sand and re-coat every several years.
You might want to do some more research on the new generation of clears, like acrylics, water-bourne urethanes, epoxies, etc. There may be something out there that is really clear and requires little maintenance for a long time.

Thanks Guys It being interior and not really a passenger bench any more, I was already thinking of the Marine Varnish. Captain's sounds good. This station is going to be used as a Community Center and the bench will be sat on. This is not a museum although we will have artifacts from the railroad and the town.

Bona Brand waterborne finishes are really tough and clear. I did a kitchen mural on a maple floor back in "03 and they finished it with a commercial grade high traffic satin clear....2 coats over one shot....8 years now with everyday use and still looks great.
