I have a business card that was created in Corel using pantone 491c for the background. (Trying to get a close match to their old card)

The card printer needed the artwork in cmyk, so I let Corel do the conversion for me, and exported the file to have the cards printed.
Corel put the cmyk values at c38 m217 y135 k138
The cards came in today, and the color had shifted a little to much to the purple side.

So before I order them again, does anyone have the cmyk values for pantone 491c ?

Thank you,
Tony

Its going to shift. I strongly suggest invest in a Pantone Solid to Process chart. There can be huge differences between a PMS solid color and it CMYK counterpart. When I had clients to complain about the color shift, having the chart to show them the difference usually takes care of the complaint.

Photoshop shows the following for PMS 491........

C34 M85 Y69 K36

Corel X5 shows the following....

C32 M100 Y100 K48

Wowzer....thanks Glenn and Elaine.

Elaine's chart gives values of C18 M85 Y65 K55

So far, no two conversions give values that are alike....and I'm a little confused.
I will look at it in the morning, and see if it makes more sense.

Those values came from Corel X3.
I had the background as pms 491c, and changed the pallet to cmyk. That's the values X3 gave me. X5 gave Glenn 32 100 100 48

The conversion is done through the Color Management settings in the app you are using. The PANTONE colors have what is called and "independent colorspace value which is usually Lab. Now depending upon your output device profile selected in the app the Lab value is converted through the output profile to yield a CMYK value. Now if you change the output device most likely the CMYK will change.

If you do not have your monitor calibrated or you do not have print proofing on or any combo you are just picking random numbers, close but random.

Thus the PANTONE system, if you specify 491c to the printer they SHOULD know based on their printing color management what CMYK values they need to get the closest to 491c

colour 491c in the formula is ttranslated as
c15 m85 y 53 k54
in the colour bridge set (r120/g48/b55 or html 783037)

these are the values in the pantone chart
and the swatch are quite similar to each other on this colour.

sometimeif you specify a pms colour to the printer, well most of the time they charge an extra for the PMS.

In the meantime, do invest in a Pantone Solid to Process chart. You'd be amazed at the difference in the colors.

I don't know how well this will work, but here is a high res scan of the chart........ http://creativegraphicsnc.com/hold/cmyk491.jpg

This even has a different set of numbers for the formula. Wheeeeeeee!!

I hope this helps.

Yes..thank you.
I have the pantone color formula guide, but will have to invest in one of the pms/cmyk conversion charts.

Never really had a problem before, but this color is wreaking havoc with my noggin'
Usually, colors at least look similar on the screen, but this one sure doesn't. Looks like a pinkish mauve.
Don't think I will ever understand it, especially
getting different cmyk values for the same pantone color.

I actually think I can get closer by using rgb to cmyk

I can vouch for the conversion charts as well. Printed a job three years ago consisting 200 eight by fours to form a large hoarding mural. Bought conversion chart just after finishing job only to discover to my horror a specified background green was about 10% off. Took a chance, fitted job and client, estate agent, graphic designer never noticed it.
Collected cheque after couple of months. Two months later client went bust. Very nearly an expensive lesson. Everything now gets checked twice with my Pantone conversion chart

I saw the color bridge a couple years ago at the Vegas show. My ex got tired of hearing me go on about how it was the coolest thing ever & I had to have 1. It's definately one of the most valuable tools I've bought.

I always tell customers we will get as close as we can and we cannot guarantee a 100% pms match

when a customer tells me a pms color I break out that chart and then flip out an oracal or a benjamin moors chart LOL

There you go, now pick one that comes close to your pms color
