Kristie and Alicia,..I have had to do repairs on firetrucks that used two part clears over asphaultum varnish,..the clear would blister after a year or so,...don't want to rain on anyones parade here it may have been the way the previous gilder did the job I don't know for sure so I can't say,..I just wanted to add a heads up before someone got their feelings hurt,...
edited to add the clear only blistered where there was some asphaultum shading,..the rest of the gilding was holding up fine,...I just wet sanded and regilded the spots needing repair as the Vol Fire Dept was on a shoestring budget after just buying a quarter million dollar firetruck,....

I watched Dad Danzenberger sp? (does a lot of firetrucks in Pa.) at Jill's meet a few years ago and he was clearing over asphaltum as Kristi mentioned.
Peace, Bob

that would be a good plan Si,..the places I had to fix were just where the asphaultum shading was and the problem was in the clear not the asphaultum,..I suspect it had alot to do with the way the gilder at the dealership did it and not the clear or the asphaultum,...I just wanted there to be a heads up as I had personally encountered the problem and I knew that asphaultum takes forever to set up when used on furniture,..I've seen old chairs with 100 year old finishes that were varnished with asphaultum and the tarlike finish would come right off with your fingernail,...the reason i know is my grandma switched my backside for scraping it off with my fingernail,..go figure
