As I posted here, last week at the urging of friends and my daughter we finally signed up on Facebook. But we are doing it with the sole purpose of bringing folks to our website and blogs. If any here asked me to be their 'friend' you won't hear back from me... no offense intended. If I accept one 'friend' I have to accept them all and I simply haven't the time to keep up with endless chatter from a thousand 'friends'. Instead we are posting to the 'wall' section of the facebook website showing projects on the go, and other pertinent tidbits and always with a link back to more information on our other sites. The purpose is to use the social networking site to bring folks our way.
So far it is working with more than 7000 hits in 7 days. The analytics from our other sites reflect the traffic being sent from facebook. One project has come from the effort already.
We live in a modern age with cool new tools. Old ways don't always work like they used to. New ways constantly bombard us. Those who thrive will change with the times and carefully embrace the modern things that will work for them. The key is to do it in a time effective manner that produces worthwhile results.

My job has changed from doing email/website marketing to almost strictly FB marketing these days. I know of a number of people who have gotten rid of their websites completely and have gone to just FB.

This is so funny. I haven't been to this site for a while but I built a web site and wanted to put the link here to help with SEO. Now people here are saying that FB is replacing web sites? Anyway I too don't tend to friend people I haven't had in my home Dan. But I am learning that a business FB should have lots of friends for the exposure.Well check out my site if you will and I will checkout yours. I am going to make a link page and if you or anyone else wants to link to my site I will link to theirs!

As I posted above I haven't done the 'friend' thing in spite of many requests. As I understand it signing up for friends increases traffic on that portion of the site. But as I understand it that would also open up your facebook site to countless feeds from other sites. While you may be able to get some valuable leads from this its a time eater to keep up with.
Instead I am only opening up the 'wall' portion of the Facebook page posting a couple of pictures and comments on past and ongoing projects in our shop ( always with a link back to my webpage or blog.) These comments in turn are 'liked' by visitors which I gather links them to their facebook pages and on from there to whoever follows these links down the line.
We are now past 10,000 hits on facebook as of tonight... amazing. And facebook referrals are showing up on our website and blog analytics. Now we have to figure out how to make it work even better.
It is fascinating to say the least.

10,000 hits? How wd a person who didnt know you stumble upon your FB page?
And how can you tell how many hits you get? I'm on FB but only a couple friends ever seem to see it.

Facebook works by referrals... The way I understand it... folks who click a 'like' button on my page automatically send a link to the article to all their 'friends'. If their friends like what they see and click on it they come to my page and see what the article is about. If they click on the 'like' button it then it goes out to all their 'friends' and so on...
The key to kick the process into hyper-speed is to post interesting stuff - things people will talk about. I'm trying all kinds of subjects on my site and monitoring the response to see what kicks things up a notch. I'm learning every day.
It's the old small rock in a pool trick... the splash is small but the rings keep going out until they reach the whole pool.

Doug, it's only available on a 'page'(not your profile) and it's called Insights to the left of the typing screen. I cut and pasted the categories:

What happens is when you like a page, it sends out a thing to your friends that says...Dan Sawatsky LIKES Imagination Corporation. They can then check it out. If you want to suggest to your friends that they also like the page specifically, you have to click on SUGGEST TO FRIENDS and choose which friends you want to share it with.

I would never advise a small business owner to adapt a FB page instead of a web site. FB should supplement their online presence, not replace it. You won't stand a chance of ever getting organic rankings on a FB page before a well optimized site.

I agree with that Dan. For us the Facebook effort is primarily used as a vehicle to deliver new faces to our website.
