I'm trying to work my way though a mental block.

Our shop has been going through a great deal of change these past couple of years. For the past few days I've been trying to figure out how to say in a few words what best describe who we are and what we do.

We started out as a one-man sign shop, then added screen printing (screened signs, decals and garments). We had always done some logo design but that was just part of our attempt to create a better looking sign. Now we're getting paid purely for logo design. In the last couple years, we've added wraps, print media (business cards, brochures and such) and website design.

My clients include businesses (both big and small) and individuals.

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be a big help.

You seem to be having an identity crisis. You may not know who you are but you you don't seem to have an issue with creating and promoting identities for others.

Identities R Us.
(We may not know who we are but)
Let us show the world who you are.

If it has a name then, Brand creation and promotion.

Well...what do you call a guy that does all that?

The first thing that comes to mind is stupid. [Smile]

No...that won't work. How about "Designer"?

Or "Image Designer".

When the road curves, it's OK to take the bend with it, Glenn, even if it means you're suddenly in a different direction, you're still going forwards-that's the important bit.

"Creative Graphics" sounds a bit generic, but it really covers your offerings very well. Beyond that, a list of what you do is at least 20 items long. It's hard to keep that kind of a list from seeming like a jumble because people don't want to read and comprehend each item. You might present a few main categories (Art & Design • Signs • Printing • Garments • Advertising • Web Design)with specifics listed under each category. I only have 3 categories on my website, but offer about 20 distinct kinds of signs and art; grouping into the 3 categories is the only way to keep it all from being a hopeless jumble.

Not sure who you are buddy - but you've got a lot of bad links or no links on your web site - so let's fix that first! Then we can figure out who you are and where you want to go--

Hehehe....You have no idea!

Dan, yeah, there's a lot of stuff not linked. Content isn't ready. Still prepping the photos. Still not happy with anything. Its SOP around here.

Working on a jQuery slider today similar to the one used on Apple's Mac store website. Debugging that one has been fun today. Works great in IE, FF, Opera and Safari. But nooooo...Chrome has different ideas. Auuughhhh!!!!!!

******

Had a guy come in looking for a reusable stencil and had been sent to us by a competitor. While he was here he started looking at the display wall and remarked about all the different things we do.

Long story short, his wife has a cleaning business with about 6 employees and had been talking several different companies for the various marketing items she needed to have done. She had contacted an agency about designing a logo, she had been to the previous shop about getting her new van lettered, and then to another shop about getting uniforms made up. And she needs business cards and brochure.

He called his wife and set up an appointment for them to meet with me next week about handling the whole thing. Wheeeeee!!!

you could just say you're an advertising agency.... 'cept unlike most ad agencies, you actually produce your offerings in-house...

So I guess that really makes you an advertising design & production house. That actually describes what you do unlike trendy buzzwords like "branding" and "identity". Nobody but other designers has a clue what those words mean and even at that, it's still sketchy.

Glenn,
Not to put anybody down but a lot of people don't even know what graphics are but they know what a sign is and if they need one they don't search for graphics. You have a very distinguished name and I would tie it in with some sort of sign identity and use this graphic stuff as secondary sales tool after an approach is made for your services. Some sign people may not agree with me but I know what works best for me...It will work for you.

Glenn, only you know who you are and what you have to offer. You have to be fully confident in your abilities. As far as I'm concerned a business has to be consistent in what they do and do it year after year, build a reputation and that becomes what you are. You have over the years done that. You have revamped your logo and I’m sure other aspects of your business, throwing in floods and all. I’m somewhat curious as to why after all these years in running a prosperous business, you are second guessing yourself. I tend to agree with Bill Wood. I’m sure you have a good reputation in your neck of the woods. It’s not about how you perceive yourself but how others perceive you. Consistency is important!
