When we produce double sided HDU signs, we normally add a plywood insert to act as the structure for mounting hardware and to add weight. Others on this board have mentioned using metal frames. Either way, very few of us would produce such signs using 15# or 18# HDU only.
I have not, however, found a wholesale source for HDU signs with any additional structure. Does anyone know of such a source? If not, would anyone dare hang a double sided sign made of HDU without additional structure?

Depends on what size the sign is Paul. Anything much bigger than a house marker gets and internal frame here. it provides all 3, structure, added weight and hardware. And I use steel.

I have hung 2'X3' oval 2 sided 15lb sign from a bracket using 8" long eye bolts gorilla glued down into the sign before. Its still up 4 years later. But I go usually make a frame and put it in the inside. I have put them between 2 posts before with no structure but usually use a thicker and denser panel.
We do wholesale work for another sign shop and sometimes he has us put frame in smaller signs than not in larger ones, must have to do with what he is making on the job. I never hear of failures.

I hesitated to post since I am not a vendor here but I still do a lot of wholesale work. I build HDU with aluminum or steel internal welded frames. Glad to look at your project if you still need help.

All of my double-sided signs have been double thickness and had steel or extruded aluminum internal frames. I prefer aluminum. No problems so far.
The only way I would hang one without internal frame would be if it's very small and indoors.

As others have noted, the size is the biggest factor. Most of our HDU signs are 15 or 18 lb. and require a backer for single faced and an insert for double. We usually use Dibond or AluPanel and sink wooden dowl pins into the HDU with epozy for the screw anchors.
Smaller signs may not require internal structure if they are mounted securely on brackets of some sort.

We always use 3/4" Mdo as a backer for either the single sided or double sided if larger than a house marker. There are a few 2"thick large hdu signs near here tne have had major problems because no internal support. The first one is 5'w x 7' tall. the bottom 2 ft snapped off the first year it was built. The piece was glued back on, the seam is obvious, but it is still ok (been about 7 yrs).
The other one is 5' x 8 ft. The bottom split and bowed out last winter/spring. It was only 1 year old when it happened.
