Greetings all:

I was approached by the local city officials. They want to install a dual cable system across the main street to accomadate large over the road banners.

Question: If 36" banners are installed, how far should the vertical cables be from each other? How much "stretch space" should there be?

Thank you for your help. [Thanks]

I would suggest a trip to the local lowes hardware and or home depot to find some standard small karabiners and measure them, then measure the distance you would need to attach 36" banner to the cables with them,..it will provide a simple fast, economical, secure way to hang the banners with grommets

I'm not doing the work, DPW is. I just want it to hold a banner straight without twisting in the wind or curling in the center. I think it needs to have some up & down tension to hold it readable. [I Don t Know]

Rick,

I never installed ones over a road, but I had a customer that we used to made huge banners for. They would be kept up for 3 years at a time lol.

They ran cables and used karibiners like Timmy mentioned attached to each grommets. Timmy has it correctly in my experience. We also used rubber bungee cords on each corner, attached to the poles to keep the banner tight. It would allow for flex and then go back tight. And contrary to what I've read, I never cut holes in them. These banners would stay up until the fabric wore out.

That system has worked real well for me.

Call someone Like Best Buy Banner that makes banners with sewn on clips and reinforced corners and ask them for the measurement. I'd think 44" would be about right.

I also think, in regard to "stretchability", they need to put some good quality heavy-duty turnbuckles on the across-the-road cables to keep them tight.

Hiya Rick,
Where are the banners coming from and how are they produced - printed, vinyl, etc?

Unless I request otherwise, my banner supplier typically will use 36" media to sew a 36" banner which means the finished size of the banner is about 34".

Although I don't have one in front of me to give you an exact size, the "snap-hooks" should extend the banner back out to about 36". So, measure your hardware to be sure.

And I would also recommend Tim & Bob's installation method with some heavy (18 oz.+) banner material.

Here's what I would suggest...

Tim's recommendation to use carabiners and cables works great.
I have used this method for hanging banners on walls, too, and you only need the top cable on a wall. A cable stretched between two well-anchored posts makes for a permanent installation for a yard banner where someone wants to change the banners regularly.

Rick,
From what I am reading I think you are asking about 'vertical' cables spaced out on the 'Horizontal' cables across the road is this correct?

If so they really are not needed if the proper banner material is used.

If you are figuring out the spacing for the two Horizontals than yes what has mentioned above using the clips sized with the banner.

My recommendation two stop the bowing is to have Mesh Banners printed they are the best. Here is a site, at the bottom will show you what I am talking about.

Thank you all for your replies.

Obviously, it can mean banner work for myself and other sign people in town. Plus, it will make it standard regardless of the event. Thanks again!

15 years ago, I made a 4' x 50' dbl-sided banner for the city of Chicago, it was to go across one of the busiest streets on the NW side. Eastern Banner Supply made the blank of 18oz dbl-sided vinyl with reinforced webbing sewn in all 4 sides and D-rings every 3 ft. I did cut wind pockets, one for about every 5sf, the city did the install on parallel wire cables, spaced so the banner was taught but not stretched. If the cables are too far apart and approach the banner at an angle, it will tear at the ends.
This might be overkill for north central Michigan but Chicago never bought another one because the contraption was actually bending the city's 100 year old cast steel light poles under a 50mph wind load.
I wouldn't recommend this for OK or KS where a hurricane is just a stiff breeze.

Eric has a good point. A banner that size has a tremendous wind load on it and would need to be anchored well. I'd consider an engineer to be involved in how it will be anchored. Light poles are usually not strong enough for a huge banner.

Mesh banner material reduces the wind load by 15%. Wind vents also reduce the load only by the square inches of each vent so 576 square inches worth of wind vents on a 24 inch tall banner would have the same load reduction as 2 feet less in overall length.

These cables will be attached to two tall buildings across from each other. 10 years ago, after 20 years of banner hanging, the cables were pulling bricks out of the building and banner hanging was stopped by the city officials

Now, 10 years later, funds have been alocated to hang new reinforced cables in the same place. They have a $2000 budget. Should do the trick
