and they look awesome! Too bad the city paid an out of town company to do them. Didnt even bother contacting local sign companies for bids. I am on the list for the city to bid on stuff and I didn't see it come to me. i am pi$$ed!
Our mayor has jacked up our business licenses and then had a citywide crackdown on people operating without business licenses...and then this? They hired a company out of Tuscaloosa to do these signs. The signs look great I wish I would have done them.
We have at least 10 good sign companies in this city that could have done this job. 10 companies that pay local taxes and do business in this city, that have licenses.
This is an absolute bitch-slap in the face. and on top of that, they are now running a campaign about how spending local goes back into our community, REALLY? Way to go Montgomery! You Rock!

Ok Bruce, 99% percent of the time I disagree with your posts but this one I have to say right on.
A few years back I was asked to quote some items for our historical society, at the same time they had asked me if I wanted to join. Now I quoted the items far below thier retail selling price so they could make a good profit, now keep in mind the items were printed magnets of town buildings and such. They ended up ordering them from a company in NORTH CAROLINA lol. They said that company was cheaper.
So when the call came to ask if I was still interested in joining the Historical Society, I politely told them I joined one in North Carolina,........ they were cheaper BTW the fee for joining was $5 lol.
No biggie, let it go, holding onto that negative energy won't be productive.

a few years ago our great city did one of those campaigns- "Shop Conway First" -all about shopping local, keeping the money in the city and such-- so they hired an out of town ad agency to design a "logo", paid an incredible amount of money for crap any 4th grader could have made- then the ad agency paid an out of town ad specialty place to order t-shirts, who eventually contracted us (we were located 2 blocks from city hall) to print them-- the ad agency screwed up the logo art separations, the ad specialty place screwed up the t-shirt order and we ended up printing and then reprinting the screwed up project-- everything came crashing down like dominos... in the end both of the out of town businesses got paid very well, the city got a bunch of ugly t-shirts nobody wanted... and we got stiffed for both the print job and the reprint job, had to take the ad agency and ad specialty group to court where we were awarded payment for services... but we never saw one dime from anybody despite the court ruling

The same thing happened here about 5 years ago and Dad took me to the next City Council meeting and brought it up. They all looked surprised except for one lady. She's the one who awarded the contract to a company in Idaho. They passed a resolution on out of aea bidding and she was censured. I'm guessing its not that simple in a lot of other places.

In any municipal background, city council or whatever, blood is thicker then water and so we have those who take money under the table just to give their constituents a view of what they are missing out on. They believe their job is to take your money and not give it to you.
On another note, this is also what happens when the county fair comes to town. The city council lets some illegal games pass through so they came fill their pockets at your expense.

Bruce I appreciate your comments. I am very sensitive to utilizing local vendors when possible; however, competitive bid laws constrain some of that activity. The downtown wayfinding signage was put out to bid by our purchasing agent and Knight Sign was the low responsible bidder by a large margin. Approximately 10 other companies bid on the RFP. This included local and out of state companies. I do not have an answer as to your not being notified as I am not aware of who you contacted to be placed on a “list”. However, we have means of public notification through our purchasing division that was sufficient for a large pool of bidders. I am open to further conversation and placing you in touch with our Purchasing Division so that they can inform you as to the methods to be aware of our solicitations for bid in the future. Please call me if you need to as I want to ensure your full understanding of our business operations and satisfaction with such. Have a good day. _________________________________________________

So Bruce, I wonder if that's the same Purchasing Division where the guy asked us for a "finder's fee" if we were awarded the first Hyundai signs?

Our county has opened their own sign shop to "save the taxpayers money". So I attend the county board meetings on a VERY regular basis, and asked them how I was supposed to pay my taxes when they were taking away my living? One commissioner simply said"gee, Don, I didn't know you were in the sign business! By the way our county has the largest per-capita count of sign companies in this state, or maybe the entire country. But things did not change and I really did not expect them to. Maybe that's why we just swore in 3 new county commissioners out of 5 in office?
