As far as I know, PayPal is like a cash transaction. You don't need credit cards at all.
I use it on my blog. It's abit fiddly to figure out, but it really is a wonderful way to purchase/accept payments. I email invoices and they simply click on the email and the payment goes through like a breeze. (mandatory for them to have a paypal account too though)
You are required to make the extra step to move the funds into your bank account though. Which is easy enough, however they don't tell you that part.

"PayPal is like a cash transaction. You don't need credit cards at all." Do you mean that you can get by with a debit card? If you're doing the purchasing, how do you pay Paypal?

I've bought things using Pay Pal in the past, almost a necessity if you are going to get anything off e bay. You can use a credit or debit card. There's also a way to use cash but I think it's a bit of a pain.
I looked into it as a way for us to accept credit cards at rallies but it wasn't going to work out for some reason, internet access I think. I've found that there is always an ATM machine handy. I make sure I locate the closest ones before we even set up.

This is for a customer who wants to pay for an $8000 sign using her Skymiles card. I've never had much need to accept cards, so I just want to make a one-time transaction possible........

Sonny - YEP you can accept Credit Cards with PayPal- they kinda hide the button because they want people to sign-up for PayPal.
If you have a PayPal business account, go to Merchant Services, then to "Buy Now" under "Make Buttons"
Enter in the info and amount you want to collect- then click on "Create Button" - it will generate 2 types of code - the first is what you would put in a website, the second is code you can email- copy the code and just drop it any email-- the customer can simply click on the link and it will take them to the specific PayPal site (with your amount already entered)
instead of logging into the PayPal account, look for "Pay with Debit or Credit Card" link...
There are fees for transactions, so your bank might be able to offer a better rate- worth checking into.

If my understanding is correct and you go through PayPal you will be charged a percentage both through PayPal as well as through the Credit Card Company. I'm not sure how much it is, but I'm thinking you could get dinged somewhere between 5% and 8% of the total transaction so make sure you know what it will cost you first before agreeing.

I've personally got my bank account attached to PayPal, so whatever I use it for comes out like a debit purchase. It's the most universal method but glad to know there are other ways.

I haven't had any experience with double charging- a bunch of my customers pay me with CC- Paypal charges to process the transaction, just like any other vendor or bank- mine is 2.5% plus 0.30¢ per transaction. (1.9%-2.9% depending on volume)
According to PayPal's website info: "when the money comes from a debit or credit card or PayPal Credit-the sender decides who pays this fee."
Most times I add the CC processing fee in to the bill to cover my costs
My account is attached to a PayPal debit card, so I use it for purchases

My daughter's swim team was looking into using PayPal for the team dues every month. They found out that there is a cap on how much money they can transfer to their bank each month. I'm not positive, but I think it was around $1200.
There will be one heck of a fee on a $8000 credit card purchase no matter who you use.
Feel free to call me if you have questions.

I'm like Donna. I have Paypal linked to an account at a local bank. I received monthly royalty income to my paypal account. I then transfer it to my bank account. There aren't necessarily fees, you have to read the the terms and conditions and not transfer small amounts, let it build up a bit. Heck with interest rates as low as they are, you're not going to get much from your bank anyway. For us in Canada, there is a delay when you want to transfer funds from Palpal. If you link to your bank account, you don't have to secure your Paypal account with a credit card. I may sound a little scary, but you can transfer funds out of that bank account to another one if your worried about it. Personally I make a lot of on-line purchases and by using Paypal, I don't have to give my CC info to anyone. Nothing on the internet is totally safe or secure, but I only leave a nominal amount in that account, so the downside is minimal. I suppose the biggest negative thing is no perks with paypal. If you use your CC, there is built in insurance in case the item you purchase is defective, etc. Also those folks that use an "Airmiles" type CC like Visa Avion, don't collect points this way either. My last bit of advice. If you're in business, accept credit cards. It's wonderful for cash flow and they can't "bounce" a CC payment. Once it's approved, it's "in your bank. It's so easy to accept deposits over the phone, and people seldom question it. So, I'm done rambling. Oh, one more thing, if you have out of town clients, get a toll free number. The costs are next to nothing and customers love it. We average 8 calls a day on our TF line and it costs us an average of $30.00/month. Just pennies a call. If your competitor has it and you don't, you'll loose business. Our service is through a company called Allstream. Allstream Okay I'm really done now. LOL

I have not read the other replies, but it's just too easy to accept cc payments from paypal. I have an account set up, but my customer doesn't have to sign up. I just sent them a money request via their email, and they pay me with their credit card to my email. Lickety split!
Love it!

ditto what Janette said. I just ask for their email, send them a paypal invoice, and they pay with any card they want to. Been doing it for several years now with no problems.

2.5% sounds reasonable. I was basing my guess on an inquiry a few years back on what it cost to accept Credit Cards. I was told the service fees were 4%. Can someone tell me what those fees are today?
