Well, the lack of running water and the invention of the wheel certainly changes that perspective, don't you know.
Heck, we whiteys have nuclear bombs and a military budget greater than most everyone else combined. Ain't nobody gonna take our wampum, now. How are we gonna pay for it? We just print more wampum and everyone is happy. When you got the biggest arrows, everyone, it seems, still think you are the big chief. We Americans are the most cannabalistic/aggressive ruthless culture that ever existed and it ain't because we spent all day fishing.
We invented fast food. Try getting a buffalo burger on your pony when you breeze through the area with the big teepees. We invented blue jeans. Try getting those at Trader Joes with a couple of beaver pelts. We invented SUVs which really are a better way to get around the reservation. We simply were more innovative, despite all our mental handicaps.
OK. I respect the heck out of the Native Americans and their rich culture and incredible history. I have lived in New Mexico and got to know many Natives. They really are fine people and contribute much to our amalgamated society, but seriously, with no tongue-in-cheek we really have developed into a much more complex society. 'Our' women are now our proud Equals. We even have an African American as am esteemed President. We Americans are today a truly amalgamated mix of everyone and all boats rise with a higher tide, despite what GW thought about the rich trickling down all of their tax savings. Where else in the world can we openly express our opinions and creative ideas? Where else can some kid with a paint brush go make a respectable living splashing up winders and live the good life? Sure, we have some problems, but on margin, I really think we have evolved a bit both as men and women and especially as ethnically diverse people. I celebrate our differences and I hope everyone sees that the future is unlimited by what we can dream. Big Two Eagles was right...all night having sex and plenty of beaver!

quote:Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds
Twinkies. Nutty bars. Powdered donuts.
For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.
His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.
The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.
For a class project, Haub limited himself to less than 1,800 calories a day. A man of Haub's pre-dieting size usually consumes about 2,600 calories daily. So he followed a basic principle of weight loss: He consumed significantly fewer calories than he burned.
His body mass index went from 28.8, considered overweight, to 24.9, which is normal. He now weighs 174 pounds.
But you might expect other indicators of health would have suffered. Not so.
Haub's "bad" cholesterol, or LDL, dropped 20 percent and his "good" cholesterol, or HDL, increased by 20 percent. He reduced the level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, by 39 percent.
"That's where the head scratching comes," Haub said. "What does that mean? Does that mean I'm healthier? Or does it mean how we define health from a biology standpoint, that we're missing something?"

Preston...you are mistaken about white men inventing "fast food"...the Indians were calling deer and buffalo "fast food" long before McDonalds made the first Big Mac.

Glenn...the article states that besides the "twinkie diet" he daily ingested milk, carrots, green beans, celery, a Centrum multi vitamin, and a muscle milk protein shake...take in less calories than what the body requires to maintain itself and the body will burn it's excess fat instead...but I hardly think a diet of only suger cakes will improve one's health at the same time...it's just not true.
Not a slam but just an update. I come from Iroquois stock; actually I'm a wolf clan Cayuga Indian, one of the Six Nation. The idea that native woman where less than their male counterpart are way off base. In our traditional government system, the women held the highest posts, Clan Mothers. It was through their bloodlines that the Sachem (chiefs) where chosen. The original Five Nations where divided into Clans, each clan had a Sachem that was placed forward by that clans, Clan Mother. The other clan mothers gathered and allowed him to stand. If he did a poor job, it was the Clan Mothers who removed him from the post. The system was a Matriarchal system, built around the women of the tribe. You took the clan of your mother not your father. You where taught the skills of hunting fishing etc. not by your father but by your mothers brother(your uncle) who was also the same clan as you. There was a cases where, in early colonial times, a white women who where adopted into one of our tribes and clan ended up becoming a Clan Mother, the highest post in Iroquois society. A Sachem(chief) was a spokesperson who relayed the feelings of his clan in council and would often consult with the clan mothers for guidance. The entire tribe, women and men, had equal voice on all concerns. At this same time in most of the "white world" women could not vote, own land own a business. Not to bad for a "primitive people" And in closing...the sex WAS good.

My reference to 'Our' women was meant to imply "us whitey's" women (formerly being mistreated with inequality that thankfully is changing today), not the Native American's. Sorry if I implied any disrespect to you, Sandy and your proud heritage. A friend of mine in Santa Fe owns Mother Earth, Father Sun and I have had many, many talks with him about the differences and similarities of our two cultures. It has always fascinated me very much. At one point, I drove through the Hopi Nation and stopped in at the Post Office Trading Post and had lunch with maybe 100 Natives, who were polite to me and very friendly. The most interesting thing I observed was how much laughter I over-heard them all have in their conversations. It made me realize the Natives really understood the value of humor as one of the magic powers of their tremendous culture!

Preston. As I said, it was never meant to be a slam and there is no need to defend. For me it was just a chance to do a little bragging and hope to share some of our culture, here, where so many of the people I respect hang out. Here at Letterville, there is such a wealth of talent and such a diverse group of artists that often, some of us newbie's feel dwarfed. Until my signwork can reflect the images in my head and heart, I sit and listen and learn. What I can't share in knowledge sign wise from my minimal sign experience at least I can share some of what my culture can offer the world.
I find that posting here is sometimes as bad as emails. No matter how hard we try and write in a way that leaves NO room to be misunderstood in what we say and be sure never to hurt anyone's feelings, it is near impossible to communicate in the same way as face to face where you can see the other persons eye, smile and they can watch us speak. Typing words leaves leaves out more than half of what a real conversation requires. Nuff said. (he steps off his soap box, gives a shallow bow, and quietly strolls away)
