Hey guys, Tried to look this one up in the archives, but I think I've got a "new" one for the Neon Sign folks. My boyfriend wants to hang a Neon sign in his bathroom, but I told him to wait until I ran it past you'all... I just paint signs, but I told him I had a way to ask people that would know ALL about Neon. Thus...here I am.
If he hangs the sign up in his bathroom, Will the steam from the shower damage the sign? Does it make a difference if it's on or off? Also, it's been unplugged/off in storage for a few years, are there any precautions he should take before pluggin it in again?

I agree with the above.....but with one other thought.
I'd take it to a shop that does neon, and make sure all the tubes are tight, the wire connections and boots are solid, and the insulation on the GTO cable is not cracked.
If it's been stored away for awhile, no telling what might have been set on top of it, or if it might have been dropped or bumped. No sense tempting fate. It was made to enjoy.

From my experience from hanging about a thousand neons for a beer company, if it's a neon with an electronic transformer...it may not last too long in a humid area.
Older neons used a transformer in a metal casing, which were better in damp areas. Although they were made for indoors, we could hang them outside under an eve, and have them last for years.
The newer electronic transformers have a plastic cover with a slotted grill. I have had these flash and burn out just carrying them in if it's raining outdoors.

Thank you all so much for the real yet humorous answers (LMAO-ZzzzT "Insta-Bald") and the serious answers loaded with advice. I loved them all!! You guys are Way too cool!
I will short leash the boyfriend on pluggin' in the sign until we get it checked out by the local Neon Dr. I knew that Neon Signs were made for outdoors, giving them the 'extreme conditions' qualifications, but the steam factor threw me... thus the post here.
I didn't even think of the wiring in these things... Oh My! (Thanking the Sign Gods I Did post the "stupid question" here!) I'd hate to see this old Neon Sign blow-up as he plugged it in! (yikes!)
