Texting that is. For those of you with experience in employees, how do you handle your staff concerning texting. This is a very real problem wih some people, it's an addiction and it costs... big time... so how did you handle it?

Yes I know that, but anyway I just called him into the office and told him the exact same thing...the problem was the rest of the staff were starting to get upset, they were working away while this fellow spent way too much time texting.. so now the cell phone has to be put away in the lunch room, and not to be picked up untill break or lunch.

Our employee handbook, which they have to sign in agreement at time of hire, states that cell/text use any time other than at breaks is grounds for termination.
If someone has to call them for an emergency, they can be contacted through the company line.

I'm with Mike. I ended up having to fire a guy last year who couldn't leave his cellphone alone.
Now the kicker.
A few months ago when I was interviewing job applicants, he came back asking for his job back. Before I could respond, his cellphone rang and he put up a "hang on for a sec" finger and answered it.

Same thing Here.. When I had Employees. All Cell Phones were to be left in your Car..If you went out on a Job You Grabbed one of the Shops Cells and when I checked the Call logs and I saw personal calls we had a talk..

The worst were some of my Designers.. I would catch them using Chat on the computers. I finally just blocked all internet access on all computers except mine.
I can really happily say. I am so GLAD I have no Employees

Welcome to my shop.
I've got a guy who comes to my shop every couple of months looking for a handout claiming he has Crone's disease and needs busfare to get home. He only lives a block away. This has been going on for 3 years.
Our shop is fenced in. A few years ago a young lady walked onto the parking lot and crawled into an employee's unlocked car to "take a nap."
Last week an elderly gentleman came in asking us to call 911. Turns out a woman jumped out in front of his car to stop him. When he got out of his car, she shoved him to the pavement and jumped into his car demanding he take her home.

The last girl I hired astonished me with how quickly she could send text messages. Literally only a couple of seconds each time to send the message.
Of course she was sending them constantly so even though she was getting her work done she never did fit in with the rhythm of the shop. I didn't can her for it, I just asked her to stop using it at work. She quit over it.

I dont understand this whole texting-twittering thing. From what I've seen of it, it's 90% empty, boring blather. "Sorry you're tired." "That sounds yummy!" "Had a great run during lunch hour."

Like everything, Texting has a time and place, texting is nothing more than glorified email really... but it can be very important, especially for work purposes...

Shortly after getting my first cellphone, it rang at 2am. Thinking no one would call me at that hour unless it was an emergency, I hopped out of bed and grabbed the phone.
It was text spam from Kelly Temporaries.
Under the contract at the time, I got charged 10cents for every text message.
I got charged for Kelly Temp's crap.
I called Kelly Temp's home office and registered a complaint. Then I went to Verizon and had them to turn off the texting feature.

Well, there's texting, like I do to send my wife a message to bring home some extra milk or something while she's out shopping, and there's incessant texting like the drivel many teenagers do these days.
In "moderation", it is just another useful tool, in my opinion.

It drives me nuts when we're right in the middle of a job, masking or applying vinyl, and she sees a break and starts texting.
ARRRGGGGHHHHH!!! Boy do we get into it!!!
Especially if I get tangled up by a stray breeze of a piece of dropped vinyl and she lays her phone down on the ground to save her "spot" in order to rush to my aid.
Still, we really do love each other.!!!!

It's crazy your line at a casher and somebody is talking or texting when paying for items taking up my time or driving endangering me. I always yell at people get off the phone and drive or get off the road. Or those people your at a restaurant talking with so and so and they get on the phone while in front of you and talk etc gees or the people behind you are yelling in the phone gees
Recently, we were in a restaurant and there was some guy at the table behind me talking on his cell ... about some pretty gross things. Other people were giving him dirty looks, but that didn't seem to bother him ... so I turned around and said "You have three choices, hang up, go outside and talk, or I will shove that phone down your throat!"
All the other patrons smiled when he said "I'll call you back later!"
