Allow me to step up to the plate on Dan's behalf (he's a little busy with a workshop) and open up an October post for his challenge.
I've been busy learning a new program called iWorks. It's a wonderful way to create brochures, so I've been messing around with portfolio ideas.
I recently lightly staged my mom's empty condo and desired something handy for the real estate agent to share with clients if he so desired. I've never been keen on the MLS type of photos so I knocked things up a notch.
Staging, a photo shoot (with my point and shoot... sigh) and digital styling are all a part of this project.
The portfolio is downloaded into an online magazine format which has flipping pages and everything. It's pretty cool.
More photos, Part 1 and 2 of the writeup and link to magazine on the blog is at:
And an update: remember my photo win awhile back? My son and I also enjoyed the rewards on that one 2 weeks ago. I won a weekend stay at a fancy resort. The writeup is at:

I'm no cabinet maker but I tried my hand at a basic box with door for this towel rack.
I made it to match the corner shelf I did a few
months ago (it got repainted, she didnt like the dirty rusty look) and also did a matching floating shelf
And heres some of the martian critters I've been sculpting
and some plant life
and heres the interior of the 17ft tall spaceship I get to decorate
I'll get some more pics this week
Jon

Chalk another lesson in music video editing!
I've been self teaching myself iMovie. The possibilities are nearly endless with editing.
I desired a clever way to announce winners of a Junk Giveaway I held on my blog, so I threw in a whole lotta whatever I could find within computer world and went to town on it. And I even learned about iTunes in the process. Oh my gosh... updated music!
No idea how to add an html feature here so I'll link to the blog instead...

Can i sidetrack a little and ask you Donna what kind of camera setup have you got? I'm becoming more interested in photography and regularly borrow a friends nikon d60 whivh I got for him in the States on holidays two years back. Would like to try and get maybe a secondhand one of those, or would that be wise?

Kevin, I'm using a Canon Powershot A650. Nothing fancy. But I will admit, although I'd love to upgrade one day, this camera takes awesome shots for what it is. My video is shot through it too.
I've heard folks going 2nd hand on better cameras with great luck. Although you take chances if it's coming from a long ways away. I have a blog friend that has written a great post on this subject. You can read it at:

Great blog thanks Donna. For one of the first times in my life, I'm going to take my time with this purchase and research well. I used to be a bit of an impulsive buyer but I'm learning, I think

HGTV needs to have Donna on there staff, she has done some awesome home and yard projects that I feel could lead into many different ideas for people watching.

Donna, you continue to impress us all with your creativity and skill. I noticed in your blog, people were commenting on their limitations producing graphics. You have the equipment, talent, know how and a good online following. Have you considered offering custom "kits" to "lay people" that want to do this kind of work but are held back by lack of graphic skills and ability to cut stencils. It could be a nice source of additional income for you. It would be so economical to ship just about anywhere in the world. I'll bet Cody could do a lot of the work and soon be running the venture himself. (Just be careful about using registered trade marks.) Also, you might consider displaying in one of those trade shows Dan sets up in. In fact you would compliment each other in the same shows. Your personality, talent and passion are inspiring Donna, the world is your oyster.

Yeah, I get asked alot if I cut 'stencils' for others. I've sidestepped the request for now because I really REALLY don't like cutting decals. They want vinyl wall art too. In fact, it takes me so long to do a painted sign/stencil because I dread #1. working on crappy strobe like computers #2. cutting decals. I need to find a corel that works on the mac.
I haven't really said yes or no. Yet. I'm still deciding where I wish to spend my time. I'd rather sell the finished signs which I'm playing around with now.

Finding a version of CorelDraw that works well on a Mac might take a few years Donna.
Have fun learning Illustrator!!!

I stayed up all night and made a table decoration I had promised to make for the 2010 Mayor's Small Business Awards, that I had been a finalist in 2 prior years... I knew for 2 or 3 weeks that I needed to do something... so, I finally had the first inkling of an idea what to do at 9pm the night before the big event..
Here was my first sketch. The "Think Local" phrase was like a "Buy American" concept, but instead, more like "Buy Maui"... and the leaf shape on top was their logo... reversed out of the right side of an oval... but i switched it to the top of a surfboard sort of shape:
and here was further exploration of where I might go with it, once I decided to make a "ring" out of a round repetition of that floral graphic:
at this point, I decided it needed taller surfboards & 2 rings, which I ended up adding a base to, with my logo:
by the next morning, I still had to change materials & tweak the design a bit, but i finally had a "winner" that was able to be assembled like a puzzle, with no fasteners:
I only had a few plats for testing out the concept, but I bought 8 more plants on the way to the event & shot this after setting it up:

I haven't posted much here, but did want to say that I had the pleasure of taking Dan's workshop in June and have been engaged in a whirlwind of work and fun since. Dan's challenges are designed to inspire and push not only his envelope but ours. I decided to begin work on a sign display to show my signs and really to get practice on projects like this. I worked on it a bit each day for about a month and gave a larger push near the end. I call it my "sign furnace" which is a response to the common question "How do you make these signs?" I envisioned a large furnace fed with paint and HDU and it kicks out signs. The display borrows very much from Dan's display in his shop, but has some of my own twists. It also includes a computer display to show a slide show of signs not on the display and talks about the process of making the signs.
