Everyone else here at Diaz Sign Art seems to think it is pronounced Al-yoo-panel, but I think it is A-loo-panel. Our suppliers all call it Al-yoo-panel, but my argument is that the product is not made out of Al-yoo-min-um. Does anyone know what the correct pronunciation is, or does it vary shop to shop, region to region?

Well the guy who invented it was named AL. Since it was made on an Indian reservation it was quite an exciting day when the Indians found out that AL got an patent for inventing it.
So one of the said "AL, YOU PANEL WIN AWARD" So THAT is why it is called AL YOU PANEL.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying the surface is aluminum, not alyoominum, so it should be pronounced like aluminum is pronounced.

The only people I ever heard say it were from the UK and they said Al-U-Panel.
I have been told that Dibond is pronounced Dee-bond, too, by Canadians.
But the UK folks I know call Corel "coral" like that sharp sea stuff not "corelle" like the cheap china.

I guess across the pond it's called "alu-minium-panel".

Glenn, that stuff in the middle is polyethylene, not PVC, so everyone at Diaz except Ben should be calling it "alyuminum clad polyethylene stuff".

Now, I just refer to it by the acronym ACM (for Aluminum Composite Material), which seems to be getting wider use, plus it's easier to say and write.

I like ACM. Maybe we'll start calling it that here too.

Ala-panel like Alabama.
I heard them say that on my last safari in Lower Bostinis by the porters. They used it to make huts out of it, since it grows naturally down there in the tropics.
Cessna used to grow it at their plant in Wichita for their wings on biplanes, but one year the tornado came by and blew it all away. Now they buy it from Alcoa who grows it in Northern Bostinis, right next to where Omega grows MDO and Dibond.

'Al-yew-panel' according to company reps . . .

And it is not 'die-bond' . . . but yes, 'dee-bond' as Jill said, also according to the company reps . . .

I understand, Ben . . . 1 against 3 . . . Your logic is sound - but it is what it is.

P.S. - It's a UK company - and the folks in Great Britain seem to favor 'al-yew-minium' for their way to say 'aluminum' . . . and that, as I understand it, is why . . .

Aloo panel here, but then I also pronounce Dibond "Di Bond" not "De Bond" although I understand "De Bond" is the correct pronunciation according to the manufacturers. That was a bone head decision on someones part. [Smile]

The manufacturer's pronunciation of Dibond is also brain dead from the standpoint of...

They want to call a product that consists of three layers of material glued together De Bond? As in... the bond will fail and the stuff will fall apart?

I think I'm going to market a new drink that will give a person confidence and self assurance. It will be called "Poise On". Wait a minute.. I think the breweries already beat me to it.

It's alooopanel, unless you pronounce alooominum
"al-yoo-min-ee-um" like some of the EU's do.

We don't talk like that down here......

Well, now that we have solved the major problems of the world we can go on to getting the more petty things done...like making signs.

Harding can come up with all those neat posts because he has all that time available just laying around in a hospital.

Oops, I don't pronounce DiBond correctly either. My customers don't know the difference anyway so I'm not changing! As for the Alupanel, I asked my supplier and he didn't know how it's supposed to be pronounced either. I've always said AL-You-panel because A- Lou-panel sounded silly to me. Why didn't they just name it Alumi-board and forget about it?

It still is amazing stuff and I just bought a 4'x 10' and have to paint it a different color since they don't make a 4'x10' in light ivory.

Sign-cerely confused, Steve

Darcy,

I never saw that movie so I wouldn't know.

Raymond,

Yes, I was back in the hospital this week for the fifth time this summer. Out now, but still weak and worthless--back to normal on that count! They kind of wanted to keep me last night too, but I opted to escape so I could get some actual sleep at home since I hadn't gotten a minute of sleep while in there.

While doing a CAT scan to find the source of the sharp pain in my side, I asked if they could check my ankle as well since it's been giving me so much trouble for the seven weeks since I passed out and fell on it. They found a bone chip in it so there's a reason I'm still limping. Now, I have to see an orthopedic in addition to all the other follow up.

Chip Carter was going to stay with us last night but opted to stay in a motel so as not to inconvenience us with me so sick. We'll try to get together sometime this weekend.
