Russ made a comment the other day (maybe on Facebook, not here?) about preferring Outlook Express to Thunderbird and it got me thinking.
Honestly, I usually run screaming from Microsoft products. I would rather have ravens poke out my eyes than use Internet Explorer, or as I call it, the Devil's Browser.
For those of you who prefer one to the other, tell me why if you don't mind. I have been using Thunderbird for quite a while now but there are some silly things about it I don't care for.

We're mostly Mac based here (one Dell Laptop)so mail is all done with Apple's Mail client. We don't do any mail on the Dell but my wife just switched from Outlook to ThunderBird on her work PC. I don't really know how she feels about the change but I can ask her.
Outlook is not too bad of an email client for MS but I agree, Internet Exploder is a deplorable piece of work. It's amazing the masses still use it and don't look any further.
Firefox is my personal preference for browsers, whether it be Mac or PC.....and Apple's Mail has worked perfectly and done everything WE need it to.

No Curtis, I seriously doubt I'll switch, just curious as to people's experience. I'm always amazed that people will still use IE.

I just like how Outlook Express works. It's very simple and does just what I need most of the time.
I traded a computer for some work, and it came with XP installed. For some reason it came without the installation of Outlook Express. I thought it would give me an opportunity to try Thunderbird.
To this day I haven't figured out how to get T-bird to send mail. It will receive it all day long, but fails to successfully send anything. Sure, there is something I am doing wrong, but I'm not sure why I should have to do this much research just to set up an email program. Never had a bit of trouble with Outlook Express.
People talk about how buggy Outlook Express is. I have never experienced this. I have thousands of old emails on my laptop with never a problem after years and years.
With Outlook Express, if you read a message, it gets marked as "read". With T-bird, hundreds of spam messages show up as read, and I have never seen them before. I can't seem to get the rules to work consistently, and I have to set them up for each account. Mail filters on Outlook Express are easy to configure, and they WORK.

Hmmm. I wasted almost two more hours trying to get Thunderbird to send email. Looking at tutorials hasn't helped yet because the interface that I'm looking at doesn't match theirs. I change my grade on this piece of junk: F-

Just get in the habit of 'compacting the folders' every so often (it's under the File drop-down menu).
Russ I wonder if your SMTP (email sending) setting is/was somehow wrong when you set the account/s up or something like that?

Ian, I have tried all the settings I can think of, on multiple email accounts. Still no go. It's possibly a function of my antivirus software. I'm using the same software on my laptop with Outlook Express, and it works great.
Whenever Outlook Express asks me to compress, I say just say no.

Thunderbird pitched all my emails....twice I should have backed them up but didnt... it took hours with a special program to recover them. I was told it is the nature of thunderbird to do that... So I switched to IE...no probs I also have a G Mail account and have no probs there...except you cant access the mails unless you are on line.

i use outlook express simply because my main email wont allow me to attach or modify fonts or anyhting in it.
sometimes outlook wont receive mail, some times it wont send and usually I just wait it out.

Sounds like you don't have the correct SMTP port number for your outgoing .... You may need to call your ISP.
I forgot to update this thread. It was the SMTP port, but it took some looking to find out where to change it. Instead of having the SMTP port info included with the rest of the settings, they put it way down at the bottom, all by itself. Now I can send. Thunderbird still sucks.

I tell my pc clients to use web based mail. When you use thunderbird and or outlook the mail is automatically downloaded from your mail server to your machine,...if an attachment is infected or has embedded malware it is automatically put on your machine this way. When you use webmail all that stuff stays on your email server at hotmail, yahoo, gmail, msn,or wherever. Almost all web based mail servers have built in virus protection and spam protection too. They scan any attachments before you download them so if they are infected they never make it to my machine. If for no other reason I keep my mail on webmail because it saves me disk space and I have all my mail from and during the last five pc's I have owned still stored on my yahoo & gmail accounts going back almost a decade, still intact and ready for reference any time I need it.

I have used web based email for over a decade. Is one reason why I do not and never had a virus problems. All this is spite of those few who say that web based email is not a legitimate way to do business.

I hate web mail and the logging in and out deal. I've used an email client for 15 years and have never been sick. So that's why all the Windows users use web mail? ....... I want my mail on my computer also and never found it to take up much real estate anyway.
We've got one Laptop running Windows 7 (which ain't that bad) but do no email, banking etc. on it.

I guess I am old-school in my thinking. I can see the advantages of web-based email, and I do use it for some of my accounts. But, I like the idea of having my emails on my own machine if I ever want to see them offline.
