Ok I better be clear, I read this from Jane:
[Ben got this e-mail through the walldog site. They are interested in the walldogs. If anyone wants to get involved, please contact them. We didn't have anyone listed in that area. Looking at the map Sherwood is kinda in the Portland area. Here is the email:
name: Alexis Bozzo
email: bozzoa@ci.sherwood.or.us
phone:
address: 22560 SW Pine St.
city: Sherwood
state: Oregon
TellUsAboutYourTown: Sprawling suburb with historic downtown, walls of various buildings are in need of some brightening up. We have a strong arts community too.]

I read that and got excited to meet some of you guys and paint so I hope I'm not starting trouble but hell lets paint!
PS-Jane I hope you don't mind that I post this.

Bruce, we DON'T mind that you post it here. I posted it here when we got it but no one responded.
Here's how this works...when Ben gets a message from someone through the walldog web site, he forwards it to some of the walldogs in the area of the message. Then the ball is in their court. In some cases, there is no one listed in the area of the request. That's when we post it here (an on the other sign sites) to see if anyone is interested.
It doesn't HAVE to be a walldog event. We have found that sometimes these towns just want one of two murals and then it is up to you to price, organize and head the mural. Think of it like any other job in and out of your shop it's just on site and you might want to pay some subcontractors (other walldogs)to help you. We have done some where it is a fully paid crew. You bid it, order the materials, hire who you want to come help, house them, feed them, whatever you feel is right. That is what this walldog website is for....information and helping us ALL out with doing this work.

I don't have a clue what is going on with this. I've been kinda slow at getting around to my emails after Danville. I got this one last Wednesday:

name: Starla Pointer
email:
phone:
address: P.O. Box 727
city: McMinnville
state: Oregon
TellUsAboutYourTown: I understand the Wall Dogs are involved in a mural project in Carlton, OR, on Labor Day weekend. I cover that city for our newspaper, and would like to talk to someone about the project. Please contact me. Thanks, Starla Pointer, reporter, News-Register newspaper, McMinnville, OR

And then this one last Monday:

name: Jon peterman
email:
phone:
address: 200 Summit Loop
city: Grants Pass
state: Oregon
TellUsAboutYourTown: small town in southern oregon on I-5. gold history, and stagecoach stop.also known for the climate and easy access to many oregon destinations

This one came in before the meet on the 7th:

name: Jerry Berg
email:
phone:
address: 2424 NW 3rd WAY
city: Battle Ground
state: Washington
TellUsAboutYourTown:
Comments: I was instructed by Jane to leave an email for Ben here concerning an upcoming event in Sherwood Oregon. I would like to be included! I\'m less than a half hour away from Sherwood. Walls are one of the main things I do in my business. I found out about this hrom the CSA site.

Like I said, I don't know what is going on. Is there a meet? What's the deal with labor day? Seems like a lot of interest in that area all starting right around the time of the Danville meet. If anyone knows whats going on please let me know.

edited to remove phone and email, but I will give them on email request.

I thought I was signing up as a wall dog, that's why my name is up there.

I am in the beginning stages of putting together a war memorial mural for the redwood lions club. it will be 20 by 150 feet. I met this morning with the head guy and he's all excited to get this going.

originally we were going to try and get it done by October but this morning decided to get it together for next memorial day.

so now its off to the sketch pad so we can sell the idea to the building owner. (he's pretty sold already)

This is what worries me. I don't get involved in contacting people that aren't in our area, so I don't know where they are getting this information. I am concerned that someone is selling themselves as a walldog event with no planning, preparation, or past walldogs.

Nobody seems to know what's going on here. And why is that? Maybe it's on our end. We need input. As is -- we respond to request and point to the walldog website for FAQ's, etc.

We get these requests and then after we reply there's nothing. What's up with that.

Maybe there's just a handful of folks who have the balls enough to host such events. I'm wondering if that's it. The truth is ... many mistakes have been made by all of us who have hosted events in the past and we are all willing to help future host avoid problems since we now have a history. And we have videos, correspondence, testimonies and even a website to help those wanting to take the hosting plunge.

It seems each meet we learn something new. But Alway, Always, Always the towns that participate have summarized their involvement with the walldogs as a wonderful and amazing experience. They come out of it with new found respect for sign artists and muralists and they have been requesting additional murals. That means work for us in these times where work is scarce.

I'll tell you this can we find a place to walldog outside Illinois? I like to bundle walldoggin' into a vacation and write some of the travel expenses off the taxes. That's legitimate according to U.S. tax laws.

I'm not wanting to call it a "vacation" when it's in my home state. I'd love to walldog far from home, and now that I'm not coaching football, I'm game and have more free time from August thru November than I used to.

Walldog meets are improving all the time ... evolving ... replacing big international Letterhead meets and such. People who attend them usually agree. They do your heart good and I'd like to see it branch out into other areas.

Bill, the site is a little confusing. down at the bottom of the page it says become a walldog and the link takes you to contact the walldogs, so I filled it out thinking I was being put on a list of contacts for people to talk to if they were thinking about a project.

Ben's post above makes it looks like I'm looking for someone to handle the job.

I'm not so worried about your contact. The one that is worrisome is the contact that I recieved from Starla. That makes it sound as if there is a walldog project scheduled for Labor Day weekend in Carlton, OR.

This is VERY confusing! The walldog site is definately for full blown walldog events but also as a contact for towns/people who just want a mural or two. If it is an EVENT, where all are invited and housed and fed, then two or three weeks away is probably out of the question. If it is just a person doing a mural, then you are welcome to do that, but I would prefer it to be people who actually have been to an event! Otherwise you are taking advantage of the walldog name and site and using it to just get work when you really have no real association with the walldogs as a group.
Obviously we are not the authority on all things walldog, and don't really want to be, but that is just my opinion...
Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
Doing a big event in Oregon would be awesome. Hopefully someone can do that.

I like Bill's comments. I've been wondering why it's seems to be more difficult to get these events up and running in other parts of the country than the Midwest.

Since moving out West from Iowa I've noticed a few differences other than the landscape & the climate. For instance, in Reno you rarely meet someone who was born & raised here. You don't have multi-generational City Council's, etc. Any type of community boosterism is normally tied to some million dollar event the casino/resorts are behind. The towns out here seem to be more transient. There is also a bigger percentage of local artists competing for work. I'd love to get a Walldog event going in Northern Nevada and I hope to pull it off someday as I get to know people in the community better, but it's a different world out here.

Jane, I also think the Location is related to the participants so far. Now that I have attended one I am working on having one here (Sent you a Registration from the Site already) and if it happens I think we will see more people from the Western side of the US show up and then expand from there.

I have always had fun in my line of work but never experienced the Comradeship that I did in Danville.. Is was so great working with other people that have the Same passion for our business and Learning new skills and passing on what I know. It made a true believer out of me.

Okay, so here is where we stand on the Oregon meet. I contacted Starla earlier today to try to get the scoop on what is happening. She said there is one mural planned and the city owned the building that it was going on. She also gave me the name and number of the city admininstrator for Carlton.
I called him up and he said they were given thewalldogs.com as a portfolio for the artists that were going to be painting the mural on their building. He also gave me the name of the artist that they were dealing with. He said they had talked to a Pete McKearnan. I don't know Pete, so I'm trying to find out if he has been to any walldog meets (Lodi possibly?).
The other possibility is that there may be some confusion as to what website and walldogs these people are dealing with. There is an O'mega graphics & signs out of Seattle that have walldogs.com as their website, but I didn't see that Pete was associated with that company. Let me know if anyone has any info. I'll email Pete tomorrow morning and see what is going on.
Any way you look at it this doesn't seem to be a walldog event in the making.

Ben, maybe they're using the name Walldogs to get in the door to start their project. Why, hell I don't know. But that is strange.
I know lot of times they ask me if I would have one here in Fresno, CA. but from looking at other meets I know it's alot of work! and kind of like Minneapolis, where it's a bigger city pop. half a million now. although we don't have that beautiful sky line like Minne, but the downtown people that I know would love for me to have one, just things are so spread out. but who knows. One thing I would have to hear alot more people would want to come out here and yes during a little cooler time of the year maybe in Spring, so yous don't have to go thru what I do during the summer months.
Anyway, I hope someone finds out whats going to happen in Oregon.

Well I wasn't trying to ride any coat tails, and if at all possible The fellow that I talked to would like to do more murals in town so this one (big Mural) could turn into a small event. I do have some experience putting together events, just not a letterhead or walldog event.

and this particular job/event wont happen until next spring, so plenty of time to decide what we are going to do and how big do we want to go.

the lions club wants to use this mural as a fund raiser for next 2 years fireworks shows, so one suggestion so far has been to sell spots on the mural that local folks could fill in and be a part of the mural. just an idea so far.

"Maybe there's just a handful of folks who have the balls enough to host such events. I'm wondering if that's it."

Yeah, mine shrink at the thought of trying to organize one. But the other part is there are many towns where it just won't work: the buildings aren't right, the city council is totally lame, and there's no city "center". (Lilburn, GA comes to mind) I talked with Judy Pate today about some alternate formats for Walldog events and I see the whole movement evolving, hopefully in a positive direction with options to fit different towns.

The big question is how do we protect the Walldog "brand" (I hate that word) There's a lot of sweat equity involved in a Walldog event and for someone to capitalize on the painterly folks who travel on their own dime to beautify an entire city is an injustice.
On the other hand, I also see Walldogs as a catalyst for individuals to sell murals in their own towns, having learned the process at a larger meet. Isn't that really what Letterheads is all about?

There seems to be an unwritten rule that there are no rules. That's why most of us are still in the game - we call our own shots. Since there are no definitive answers, here's what Little Walter did when harmonica players down south would play honky-tonks under his name: He showed up at the gig and shot them.

I'm not suggesting anything, it's just a musical history lesson..........

I think you are talking about something seperate from the mural happening in Carlton on Labor Day weekend. Like I said, I think that is related to a website mixup, but I haven't heard back from Pete yet. I would highly suggest attending a walldog event before trying to organize one. It's alot more than just painting a few murals & is kinda hard to explain to someone who hasn't been there.

....the Carlton mural is at the home of a local sign artist who host a yearly meet in conjuction with his family's annual BBQ. It's small, usually around 5 - 10 sign makers.........certainly not a national get-together.

Oh wow, I feel dumb!!! I thought you had meant Oregon, Illinois as you have had the run on Illinois towns!!

Oregon and Washington states are the only states I have never been to in the U.S.A.

I've heard a lot about Grants Pass too!

Careful, Deb - Grants Pass is where the infamous Joey Madden lives - and I guarantee he'll be packing heat in his harmonica case........
