When shopping online, eBay or smaller companies you dont know previously, what's safest and less possible hassles -- mailing a personal check, PayPal, or what?

If ebay- check up on feedback. Beware that people can have ebay names hijacked too.
Safest: cash on pickup. Least hassles: Paypal.

we've been using Ebay for several years with very little problems. PayPal is reasonably safe. I did have one person try to rip me off on Ebay. I sent him about $150 and he never sent the item. After a couple of emails and a phone call, He closed his listing and his Ebay account; but not before I had retrieved some of his contact info. A quick google got his name, and a record of a run-in with the law where he was convicted of grand theft. I emailed the sheriff's dept where he lived in Illinois and within hours they were calling me on the phone eager for me to press charges. I got my money back.
The safest I know of is an escrow service. You will have to pay a fee for it though. Basicly an escrow service will not release the money to the seller until you receive the merchandise and give them the OK.

Our son very nearly bought a laptop via Ebay- good deal, goos specs, good price, but I told him to just wait & send a message first. I just didn't feel right about the whole scenario.
He sent him a message, then a second. We received an Ebay email 'your message could not be sent because the seller has been suspended'...it seems he was advertising & trying to sell things he did not posess & could not deliver...
Gut feeling really does help, with a healthy dose of scepticism! Having said that, we've bought & sold with very few hassles.

Ive been doing ebay for several years and had jsut a few problems. always check the persons ratings and their feedback content as to how much they have. I must have a awesome relationship with my credit card company because the first sign of problems i contact them. they will take care of it quick!
The last problem i had was I bought some software on ebay and when I got it it was a freaking burned copy. SO i contacted seller and said refund my money, he refused and I contacted Adobe. You know what Adobe did? nothing HOWEVER I bought Dreamweaver NEW CD on ebay and tried to do my own website after I figured out I didnt have the patience I put the Dreamweaver BACK On ebay. AFTER the item had sold EBAY and ADOBE came after ME for selling pirated software LOL. This went on for bout 3 months and finally I found out what started the whole thing. When I listed the item I put on it "This product was never registered"....Ill know better next time when i list software.

I have an Ebay STORE and have been operating it since 2007.Betsy spends hours every day corresponding with potential buyers, making sure when they make a purchase the item leaves our inventory promptly. We also have tracking numbers to make sure our buyers get their items as well. When you operate in this manor you become a top rated seller and soon a power seller.Positive feedback is the only way to aquire this sales status. You can check out our feedback buy opening the STORE section and typing in BW CUSTOM SIGNS

I've been burned twice on ebay (out of 150 transactions) The first time the seller overnighted me a refund check so no big deal. The last one I had to file a PayPal dispute. PayPal "refunded" the money....but in the form of a PayPal gift certificate so I have to buy something else on ebay to actually use it.

screw that, you didnt pay with a gift certificate did you? PAYPAL sucks and ebay sucks ONLY because they could care less about the seller. If your a buyer you cna do whatever you want but they abuse their sellers to the max
