Thank you for that, I've been trying to explain that to someone for the last couple of weeks and this is a great quote.
I work as a marketing consultant, I get paid a flat rate monthly. The company I've been working with wants to know how many hours I'm spending on it. The amount of hours is completely irrelevant. Something that takes me 10 minutes could take someone else 2 hours because I know what I'm doing and they don't have a clue. They're paying for my expertise and experience. I gave them a proposal for my services, they countered with 40% of the amount. I politely declined and thanked them for the opportunity. Even if it would be nice to have the money, I'm not going to devalue my work for chump change.
