Swift made a great product. I used it from my begining in the sign trade, was sorry to see tne old man close the business, the son was not interested in keeping it going. Great loss to the trade!

Do you remember the little booklet Swift made giving instructions on glass gilding? One of the stories that still makes me smile was Rick Glawson telling how he read that Swift booklet and did it step by step to learn to gild, and did it on someones window for pay.

I still have one of the Swift booklets and Hastings as well and both were the same size with much the same instructions.

Dennis, just to help you along with your soon to be addiction...check out www.pinheadlounge.com
it's a website for artists to display their pinstripe/airbrush/lettering art, there's no charge, you can add comments, set up your own portfolio page, it's set up first name alphabetically, easy to find people, i check it daily when home, and it's a constant source of inspiration....leading to panel swaps with people around the world!
If you have someone to get you started with the basics, i.e. brushes, paints, proper thinning techniques (everybody has their way, "the only way") ... and basic strokes, you will be on your way.
Another post on here discusses learning to letter....same deal practice practice etc... but...you can be doing some cool stuff striping much sooner than in lettering, it's a shallower learning curve, lettering is very specific, and learning to push the brush so that your lettering is consistent with the letter style that you are doing takes considerable time.
Hmmm, if you've some leaf, maybe you're already a signwriter, if so, you're way ahead of the game, "it's just another brush and paint" well, kinda, but, if you have loved lettering at one time, you're gonna enjoy this new adventure... maybe we'll do a panel sway down the road
one last thing...remember to keep some of yur practice stuff as you go along, so that yu can see your progress day to week to month, otherwise you only have your latest piece to see, and not see where you've come from...
happy stripin' john

Greg - If you email me direct dbrooker(AT)dbrooker.com I'll email you a scan of a package, I wasn't sure how to post a photo on this forum -
John - I just found a local guy who has been striping for over 30 years who is going to give me some pointers and hope to meet with him soon and I've found the pinheadlounge - LOTS of good stuff to look at - Thanks for the heads up - MY first job as part of my senior year of high school was as a sign painter but that was in 1970 - I may have to practice a little ;^)) -
For now I want to focus on the pinstriping - I'll be placing my order for paint and reducer tomorrow and will practice when I'm able to - I'm recovering from 19 months of severe nerve damage to my drawing arm but it's finally just starting to get better but I'm still on lots of drugs and pain killers - The thing that brought me to striping was that I can use my left hand to steady my right - The doctors said it could still take years, so I figure this would be good therapy - DB
