Ahh, Last nite I was up till 3am comtimplating on firing a customer. I'm just to busy. He's from out of state and thinks I can jump off what i'm doing to work on his project, a political campaimge. So I called him and gave him the bad news. Ah! I'ts like breaking up with a boyfriend, "It's not you, it's me". But now I'm off the hook. I feel so much better.

You made a wise decision... if dealing with realtors is like dealing with the devil.... dealing with political campaigns is like dealing with the devil's mother-in-law.... (other than the local small time political races...)
Had one guy I did a bunch of stuff for... we screen-printed over 12,000 signs for him and all KINDS of other stuff... he came to me from out of town, so I knew he'd probably already made everybody in Pensacola mad... I demanded money up front for everything... then after a check bounced, I started even waiting for a few days before starting on anything to make sure the checks cleared...

Overall, when these things happen, I always blame byself for not taking action right away. I should have right from the start made him come out to my shop for all design questions. I was going out to meet him at a motel. I didn't like getting a hug and a kiss on the forehead from him. Ugkkie! He wanted to buy me a black leather skirt. Oh yeah, like I'd wear that. I told him I prefer suede. But overall I wasted about 6 hours of my time with his dumb azz campaingn.

If a potential customer kissed me and promised a black leather skirt I would give him a black eye. Never meet a man at a motel, that is a no-win scenario. I always refer people wanting political signs to the Internet, they can get cheapies off eBay or "design it yourself" sites and not waste my time. I wouldn't give it another second's thought, you are better off without him. Love....Jill

Oh by the way, he did try to get me to get back to the motel. He had a business card from an old customer of mine from Southern California. I asked 'Who is it"He said' Oh I don't know, I have the card in my room" Oh yeah, Like I'm gonna waste and hour drive there to to read a card. H During this time, he had alos bought a new convertible Mustang, he thought I'd be impressed. Wanted to take me for a ride. What a dumb azz!!

I love stories about firing customers, it makes me feel normal.
You should call his home and leave a message with his wife (I'm sure he's got at least 1) that he forgot the (stutter some here) quote at the motel, and that you reconsidered on the leather skirt. Keep it simple and have some fun. He needs punishment.

i see the Mudflap Sign lady attracts....other sign painters fedback.......this is a community of sorts for letter folks.
after 30 years, as a sign shop owner, like some of you folks, i have recently learned the business skill of " just say NO 101 ". the New England cutie uses the course title..( beeep OFF sucker 103...... hoes the lucky kit, )
Outline of my "small scale" lesson- 1. if they are the Center of the univers...i.e.= in a hurry ....pass 2. when someone requires a great deal of time before a deposit.....pass 3. if they reveal they want to do business with you since your "local"....hang up 4.their phone skills, i.e.-politeness/consideration/ time frame...all dictate how they will pay , in most cases.
5. you go senorhrita sign lady. ! nice photo......take care all.
rudeness to "some" customers is easy....the marketplace is becoming very "me driven & demanding " my favorite line is to say.....i offer quality @ a fair price....you may have to call the local "Signs by Lunchtime"...have a good day.......( dialtone).........
Thank God my wife has a great job !..... marketplace
