If you are trying to change the size of an object by dragging the corners or sides, you need to enable the "bounding box". On the PC it's done with ctrl-shift-b. The key command on the Mac would be similar, but I can't remember what it is.

I turn the bounding box on and off, as needed. Sometimes I need it. Sometimes it's in the way.

Also, six boxes down in your tool box, you'll see the "free transform tool". This will give you a bounding box on your selected object. Sometimes Illy will not give you a bounding box even with it turned on. Almost like Illy has it's own mood!! Hahaha, anyway.. you most likely need to do what Russ said.

Oh yeah Russ... it's "command > shift > b" for Mac.

I used to really hate the bounding box until I figured out how easy it was to turn off and on. Now I use it constantly.

hmmm... while there are Illustrator experts tuned in... I'm afraid the answer will be "reinstall the program" which I don't want to do... so I haven't asked for the last month...

but I have CS4 design premium & it has started doing this thing where I can't access preferences. When I try through the edit menu, it locks up the screen to where any mouse clicks only result in this audible "bell" sound.. and then I can get control back using the escape key, whereby I decide I didn't really need to change preferences anyway [Roll Eyes]

any clues anyone?

(sorry for the hijack, but Kevin seemed to have the answers he needed already & his thread title was too perfect not to hijack for this question [Cool] )

I haven't seen that problem, Doug. I wonder if there is some conflict with other software since the escape key brings control back.

Lol, Doug, your mug shot looks like you've spent the last month in Illy trying to hit that escape key & fix your preferences! [Wink] [Wink]

(P.S. Thanks, I was unaware of the bounding box bit. My 'silly' workaround was to save it, and open it in Corel and work on it there...)

P.P.S I'd better not update my pic or you might not notice the difference between me & Doug, either... [Smile]

I've been having a weird problem too like switching back and forth from outlines to colored view or zooming in & out using the keyboard. Nothing happens. So I'll have to use the mouse with the magnifying glass and then after a few other commands everything starts working again. Weird.
