I found this washed up on the beach and was wondering if anyone knows what this is. It looks like some kind of guage, but I don't know what it might be. I realized I don't know how to post the photo, so you can't know what I'm talking about.

You might try a Google Image search. Does the gauge have wording on it?

Sounds to me like it is a left threaded Johnson Valve assembly with that rare Greef board connection. I hear those wash up alot on the beach out here in Kansas out near Bird City. You might try Ebay to sell it, under beach flotsam catagory, but it might be easier to explain with a photo?
...Naw. Looks more like one of those old Ace pin guages they used to use on three wheeled boats that the Chuki Indians used when they crossed the Atlantic? Probably worth an arm and a leg. Try blowing on one end and see if it registers anything. Better wipe it down first, in case there are any cooties left in it. You might consider a new career in historical beach debris?

I thought it was a primitive set of calipers for assessing whether the vinyl was cast or calendered...

No it's a chicken Back Breaker, they have little gauges for different size Chickens, and the gauge has 2 different switches, if you turn it over you can see it... the one that says large, that's for turkeys... and it's made out of Hollow alluminum, that's how it washed up on the beach.. there's reports of a cargo ship going down in your area with about 500,000 of these on board, along with the Chickens.. surprised you did'nt get a feed of Chicken out of it.. then again, they probably just Flew away with the Turkeys.

It's a bottom mud depth gauge. These are normally mounted on boats, so that after they sink, years later, divers can come and look at them to see how far the wreck has sunk into the mud on the bottom.
Sometimes they break off and float to the shore.

I know what it is!!! A learning board from my math teachers homeroom, holes were for "clarity"...
Actually, it's a "locks key", used in locks to let water transfer from the key block...seriously...
No, seriously, it's a valve stem arrangement board, keeps valves in order for replacement...
Or.........what Raymond said...
One of these is right, guess which one...
