I have a friend of mine who just bought a new Goldwing, wanting to get a Photograph of his late Daughter etched onto his windsheild... I know that it can be done on headstones but can it be done on lexan? and if so, where?

Good Morning Frank, you're up early... I thought about acid etching, but I guess I'm going to have to turn the Photograph into a line drawing of sorts, would'nt I? I think he's seen those detailes images on headstones and wanted one like that.

Sorry, caught me off guard...ok, after I posted about etching, I remembered a technique I used quite a bit in the past. Dentists have an airbrush eraser that uses a very fine blasting medium, like a super fine sand...it's a special abrasive and can be used for stage blasting, of sorts, working in a smaller enviroment than stage blasting....which is technique I'm pretty sure they use to do those headstones...Pasche sells them, don't know who else...maybe think that way? With stage blasting you can stage your layers and create a lot more detail than single demensional etching...hope this helps...

Depending on how flat the windshield is and what size the photo needs to be, it is possible that it could be done on a laser engraver. I believe that is how some of the headstones are done.

www.rayzist.com Works great, etch a half tone with aluminum oxide or silicon carbide blast medium.

For over 30 years I used a Paasche Air Eraser and masks to do any number of things, They are excellent and the unit is probably under sixty bucks, I still have one brand new in the box as up here I don't get calls for it use. It uses aluminum oxide and looks like an airbrush and works off the same compressor. Heres a link to one Air Eraser

Another way would be to convert the photo to a single color spot color print, Using your edge, use abrasion guard, double print it on clear and apply it. I used that technique years ago on top of mirror gold to get a "matt center" effect on vinyl window lettering.

Hi Neil, never had much luck blasting lexan or plexi, but you can use a photo resist in several different ways, easiest is to send the photo out for resist developing, I use Prestige glass in Elliot lake Ontario, Marj has contact info if you want, call us

Here's a photo that he wants put on his bike..This was his only Daughter, she was killed along with His Mother, her Grandmother, in an auto accident about 4 years ago... she was Beautiful! He wants it etched into his winsheild at about 4" high... I'm really nervous about this one, so probably the best thing to do is try one on a scar piece of lexan first...
Pete thanks as well as everyone else.

Yep, I have the photobrasive system and it works great. Here's a sign we did where the customer wanted a picture of the artist on the sign. We blasted it on a piece of glass which was installed from the back of the sign. The picture was of very poor quality but we still got decent results.
