Ya, I'm old too, but this isn't about me, it's about possible worth of a 12-13 yr. old MacIntosh Power PC...and before the boat answers come like rain, it's already been said by one of our more astute Mac types, at least I think so, his response was..."Own a boat?" I assuming the rest...any ideas? It's supposed to have flexi and corel in it...worth the trouble to find out?
Thanks for any input......

Frank..... I'm a little offended you think the wisecrackers on here would recommend you use that thing for a boat anchor... that'd be kinda rude about your good ole Mac...
I would recommend something like cutting a hole in the top of it and using it for a flower pot... much more respectable....

Frank, unless you need it for speed or memory hogging applications, that antique will run spreadsheets, word programs, old versions of flexi and illustrator. Printer compatibility could be a problem so make sure the OS will drive it. Call me & bring it to Fred's.

OS 9 will run almost all the way back to the IIsi, and you can install OS 10.4 I believe on G3, G4 and G5s. Just beware that most older programs will run on OS10 in "classic" mode and will be S L O W.

Frank, I'm still running a Power PC for plotting. I have Flexi from that era, which requires a dongle. My version of Flexi will not run on any OS past 9.2 and finding a dongle that will run an old version of Flexi on a newer OS will probably be next to impossible. I also have Corel 8 for Mac which I tried on that machine and gave up. The program is slow, buggy, and crashed a lot. I gave up on it and stuck with Illustrator which ran fast and smooth.
If it's version of Flexi comes with it's dongle, and you want to mainly use it for plotting, it may be a good deal. You can get a usb port for it, but most new printers won't print from that old of an OS. But it will run a new LCD monitor.
If it's like mine, a Power PC 7300, it's probably worth about $50. Corel for Mac isn't worth anything but the Flexi could command one to two hundred dollars if it's the full blown $4000 version.
Basically, that set up is only worth anything if you want to buy Flexi at a super discount. The computer is only really good for using the software that comes with it. If it's cheap enough, you can get a refurbed G3 desktop with a Mac OS as far back as 8.6 installed for the delivered price of $140 (no keyboard or monitor)if you're mainly after the software and the Power PC craps out.

Frank, do you mean you want to buy one? If so, you need to find out if it's a G3 or G4. If it's one of those PowerPC's with the grey tower that opens easy from the side, you can do a lot with it if you don't mind putting in a little time. A G3 can run OSX 10.1 with pretty good speed. Before I sold my G4 tower (which is still being used as a server) I had installed a gig of RAM and two ATA hard drives. I was running OS 10.3 with Photoshop, Illustrator and Office X with great ease. The trick was to keep OS 10 running on the main hard drive alone and use your design programs on the second hard drive. Those Macs use PC parts (PC 133 RAM and ATA hard drives) still kind of easy to find. The tower has about two USB 1 ports so you'll want a HUB if you're going to try printing. The other option is using one of the two Firewire 400 ports. They also handle new flat screen monitors, I was using a 20" wide screen Samsung. It was great for designing.
Years ago a friend of mine had one of those ugly Clamshell G3 iBooks, not much to it. we busted the bottom open and replaced the hard drive with a 20gig laptop hard drive. We added RAM from an old iMac and installed OS 10.1 on it. It was said that OSX couldn't run on a Clamshell iBook. Not only did we get it running, we had Quark and Illustrator on it. My buddy ended up design a full newspaper on it and getting it printed. So yes, you can do great things with old Macs if you have the time. Flexi 7.5 will run in OS X. There are versions of Flexi for OS 9 as well and that running system is also very stable.
That being said, a new Mac would be the better choice.

Ask a question and sit back and absorb the knowledge, love this place...
Curtis, as this rig ended up in my room (it's my roommates) and I need the space, I originally wanted to know if it was worth even selling and at what price, even considered the boat anchor theory...now I think I'm going to explore using it...it was an expensive investment for roommate and has programs in it he's forgotten what they are...Thank you for input, I'll use this information to check it out...
Which leads me to Eric...I'll just bring it along w/me to Fred's and we can go over it together...do I need to also bring monitor? This a large unit! Of course I'll bring the ambilical cord, but not sure about screen...let me know...thanks
As soon as it's determined exactly what it is, then I'll make decision as to whether or not it's for sale, the junk pile,or use it myself....sure hate to throw away something of value I can use to help me in my current endeavors...thanks everyone for input, I'm sure eventually I'll understand what all this input means, half of it is foreign to me at moment, but I'm learning...

at least use it for the Internet, it will be virus-less as my PC is in the shop and here I am on my trouble free Mac, never been down and never a virus and I will never add Windows to it ( OSX -Safari forever ) and happy about it

Joey, you might want to try Firefox, faster than Safari and apparently more secure. (some financial sites only accept Firefox)

Thank you Eric but I have Firefox on my PC laptop and many of its problems in the past year related to Firefox so I switch between FF and Google Chrome. Safari works well on my G5 and regards to financial sites I don't know what you mean, can you explain that? And I basically cannot update the G5 cause I haven't a clue how to change the keychain password which was lost and because of that updates can't be had by me
