Larry, I'm intrigued by the remasking of the sandblasted bits, to get the fine edge definition in the ornaments etc. Surely you don't hand cut lots of tiny scales/bits, and hope the vinyl adhesive holds them each in place while you blast at them- or do you?

Hey, thanks for the great comments! This was a fun and challenging project. Part of the fun was doing it all by hand! Pencil, Xacto knife, paint brush...you know the kind.
And yes, believe it or not, I did reuse the little bits of sandblast masking and re-apply them into various areas. As I cut and remove them, I put them back on the carrier sheet. The sand carved area is blown off, then cleaned and allowed to dry, prior to the mask going back in. Every now and then a piece will "blow", but I have had good luck so far.
Rouge gold is 23K gold that has had copper added to it which gives it a slight redish tone. Sometimes it's refered to as Rose Gold. I also like to use Moon Gold, which is copper added to a lesser karat of gold and has a tan hue to it. Another one I like is Palladium leaf, which is a bit darker than silver leaf.
After this sign was complete, I took it down to one of the Memorial Conclave meets, hosted by John Studden at Valencia Signs & Graphics. Danny Busselle, a SoCal sign guy, saw it and decided to buy it.
I didn't see it posted over here, but, unfortunately, "Danny passed away on the evening of the 23rd of December 2009. Danny, or "Crazy Danny" as he was better known to many, was a well known Letterhead in California attending many Conclaves & local meets. He worked a lot in the Film Studios on signage & faux finishing & also I believe for Dean Hensley." He will be missed.

Larry, I would like to be a fly on your shop wall and just study how you do things...this is gorgeous work. Thanks so much for sharing. I don't know anything about incredble....diligent, yes. I have found where there's a passion for something, it comes fairly easy and effortless. Patience is only required to do things you don't want to do. I understand I'm a bit of an extremest, so I just channel that accordingly. I kinda figure anyone could do this type of work if they got their mind right on what needs to be done. Of course, there is the need for the correct equipment and place to work, and a few years to develop some skills.
Well, anyone in my neck of the woods is welcome to stop by and say "Hi", we'll pop some corn and throw on a western on the big screen. Did I ever mention my whole shop is decorated like an old western town?....maybe not. Another one of my neurosies. Buildin' and gildin' are two of my specialties. Hell, beats sittin' around smokin' pot. I digress....
I was asking $8200 for that beauty...gave my friend a bit of a discount....but, I don't want to talk about those things.
See, I ain't the mean bastard people make out...
