Last summer I took the decision to move the shop home. Needed a building, so no big deal, took the hammer out and two months later, Voilà! The building is 20 feet wide by 36 deep with a 10 by 20 office upstairs. Shop has 15 foot ceiling. Just enough room to have fun and to handle the kind of work I do. Garage doors are build 12 feet high with 100 years old barn strap hinges.
Here's some pictures...
Wood siding will be a spring project...
Was able to get all the furniture at the flea market and in classified ad for cheap! The steel desk must weight two tons!
It's kinda nice working so close to the family, the living room and the fridge! A sign shop is like a playplace for the kids!
Well now that the building is done I am exhausted, tired, broke, but HAPPY!
Did I mentionned life is so good!?

Nice shop Pierre! I can renember how happy I was when I finally got my shop finished and then got my home office finished.
How is it heated? What is under the Tyvec for insulation? Is it built on a "floating slab" or is it on a foundation? Does it have an extraction system for paint fumes?
I know that the folks in the south aren't much concerned about foundations and heat much..so...is it air conditioned??? LOL
edited to add...I know that most Canadian and northern USA shops NEED to be heated during the winter, but are many or most shops in the southern states air conditioned?

Each of our shops should reflect the type of business we want to be. With your love of old fashioned hand lettering the shop your space says that clearly. Your passion shows as it should!
Congratulations on your new shop! I hope your investment pays off handsomely in every respect!

Nice shop Pierre. There is something to be said for building it yourself (plus the money savings). I have a desk that looks just like that one. Real heavy but strong I have stood on mine to reach the shelfs above it.

Congrats, Pierre, Welcome home...As Dan says, your space reflects your passion very well...We've been working from home for 22 years and wouldn't have it any other way... Kids grew up in here, and they wouldn't have it any other way either...Good luck, and as Dan said, live the dream...Pat

I'm amazed that the outside is 20 x 36 ft, but inside, it's like one acre in area...
Well done!

Great looking studio Pierre, there's nothing like having the family around as you work. My boys grew up thinking everybody could letter like we all did. Best of luck in your new adventure.

I got one of those ceiling heating system with an integrated fan it's 5000 watts and it's supposed to be enough. I also installed a 48" fan for better heat circulation. Up to now it's all right but just in case I have put a 220 connection in the wall and another 4800 watts "construction cube heater" is waiting in the storage room.
What is under the Tyvec for insulation?
Walls are build in 2 by 6 with 6 inches of batt (r-20), polyethylene inside, plywood and Tyvek outside.
Is it built on a "floating slab" or is it on a foundation?
Floating slab 12 inches thick around (act like a footing) and 6 inches in the center. I used an old screen printing drying rack for grids into the concrete!! There's also 55 tons of 0-¾ compacted gravel rocks underneath.
Does it have an extraction system for paint fumes?
No. I like to keep the fumes for myself!
I know that the folks in the south aren't much concerned about foundations and heat much..so...is it air conditioned??? LOL
I have two small portable units that I can install in the windows. It will be mandatory in the office next summer I'm sure!

And to answer Ian... if you've ever seen Pierre... well he sees it as an acre too!
Seriously, I was fortunate enough to be there in person along with my crew and Noella. The shop is amaizing, very fonctional and organized, the decoration brings you back to the 50's.
Bravo my little friend, you're a giant when it comes to talent!

That is an excellent shop. Im considering a move to my home soon. The building I have been renting for 11 years is going to be sold and torn down, so I have to either find another place to rent, or build a shop. Im leaning towards building. Yours surely looks nice and has a very nice atmosphere.
