My old printer here in Mexico bit the dust...so I went in search of a new printer.

Found a brand new Canon printer..Pixma iP1300..total cost was 449 pesos (about $40 Canadian). It came with a colour cartridge only and it will print fine with just the colour cartridge, but it also accepts a black cartridge.

So I went in search of a black cartridge...best price I could find was 395 pesos!!

WHAT??? printer and colour cart. costs 449 but a black cart. alone costs 395??????

THIS is truly a throw away printer at about $40 Canadian!

You got ripped off! [Razz]

Printers go for less than that with both b/w and colour!

BUT the cartridges each cost heaps more!

So I refill as much as possible. Just means drilling a small hole in the top and filling with cheap ink.

Otherwise I junk the printer and start again.

Dave

I bet you had to go into Merida for the printer.

I had a similar problem with my Dell 1100 laser printer a few years ago.

LOL..No trip to Merida to buy the printer Steve..It was on sale at Bodega Aurrera in Progreso...But the best price on cartridge was in Merida.

Next time you visit, bring cartridges and more gasoline stabilizer!!! LOL

Oh and a suitcase full of "Phillies" shirts..I can arrange for you to set up a booth on the malecon.

Haha. I bought the same printer at Walmart in Mérida. Quickly realized the same thing. And according to the local cartridge shop, the cartridges aren't refillable!

Dave, if you find a good deal on the cartridges, I'm in the states now, I could bring some down to you...

Dave, we have the same printer- iP1300 - same story- supposedly unrefillable colour cartridges...
Printer was $19 on special, with half-empty cartridges, but the two full replacement cartridges cost about $68 to $85 depending on where you go.

however it has lasted us well for the bit of inkjet colour printing we've needed.

I still run an ancient Lexmark black & white laser printer -the Optra S 1800 - with a duplexer for plain black text prints. It works out at about 10 pages per one cent of toner cost, if you get the bulk refillable toner cartridges.
We ended up buying two others of the same model for spares, at about $30 each + a bit of freight- they're so old no one wants them, but they were built to last, and built to withstand a big workload like 10 000 pages a day.

I like the idea of the Xerox Phaser with solid wax colours, which gets mentioned here from time to time, but haven't found any for sale downunder for any 'cheap' price.

After hearing the ad they've been running we did the math and buying a Kodak printer made sense for us. The printer was $110 (we got the printer/scanner/copier combo printer) but a replacement combo ink pack with a color cartridge and a black cartridge is only $25. The printer will pay for itself in less than a year on the ink savings.

Phillip...No need to bring down cartridges...I will toss the printer when the ink runs out! Besides, everyone has probs with their printers here...heat, humidity, salt etc. seem to trash them in a couple of years.

I love my old Canon s300 back in Canada...I think I paid about $75 for it several years ago and the cartridges are $7 for black and $15 for colour.

They almost give the printers away, but they get you on the ink ! My Photoshop instructor told the class that printer ink figures out to around $6,000 a gallon !

Kinda like here, Dave. I've seen Lexmark printers here for /$39, ready to go. The carts cost about $55 to replace. How's that for a 'disposable society' for ya? Why would you NOT pitch it, and get a new one?

Warren..life is great in Chicxulub!! Palm trees are waving, the gulf waters are lapping and when it gets below 70F we start looking for sweaters!!

I am amazed that, recently, I have heard from folks who post on Letterville and who also live or visit in our little area of the world.

Muy bueno!!

Dale..Ya know it IS a shame..We can afford to toss a cheap printer. Schools here in Mexico would love to have them..but the schools can't afford to buy the cartridges.
