This is a spin off on Donna's post, but I've been wanting to delve into this for the past couple of weeks and haven't taken the time. Here seems to be as good a place as any to do that. Who do you use, what is the cost, how easy is it to set up, how often do you have it done? I have external hard drives, but don't seem to get around to using them. Fortunately when my hard drive crashed on my laptop without warning, my son managed to retrieve the files for me.

Hi Kelly, I back up my files in triplicate on 3 external drives. I force myself to do it at least once a month. I have lost files before and really hate redesigning something I have already designed. Or you can get an imaging program, and just image your whole drive.

Kelly- I use Mozy.com for online backup and it costs less than $5 per month for unlimited storage (they will give you 2gb free to try) as I mentioned in a previous post- they saved about 1500 photos that was lost when my laptop harddrive had a mechanical failure. It was very simple to retrieve my data from Mozy. You can set it to backup and run in the background.
I also use a portable hardrive as a backup, and from time to time, I also backup stuff to DVD.

Another vote for Mozy here. I have all of my work and personal files on it.

For about 20 bux you can get a software package that will back up anything you want. All automatically and without worry.
I have a software that backs up what i want on a regular schedule to several places. It does it so well that I merely check every few weeks to make sure a back up was made. Fortunately I have never needed to revert to a back up.
Online back ups are good but they are not the foolproof answer. The first few weeks your system will in back up mode uploading your files. It well take a long (weeks) time to get it done. It will slow down your machine while doing it. Then if you ever need a yoru back up it will take days to get it back. Yes,, days.. Especially if its in the multi gig range of data.

After a hard drive problem a few weeks ago I decided to do more than just back up onto disk, both DVD and external hard drive. Came across a very good program called CrashPLAN that is both online and onsite backup program. My computer "guru" had a look at it and was so impressed he now uses it. It's free for onsite and very reasonable for online. Also keeps me informed about my backups by email.
