We've always stained our wood gray but I have heard of other ways... here's one
Get hold of some (concentrated) hydrogen peroxide (available at a hairdresser supply), paint that on, let dry , then paint with cloudy ammonia, and leave out in the sun.

There is a chemical that is used in the pond business that will grey wood. Can't remember what it's called.

I spoke with Rick today and got some great ideas...including using plant fertilizer and black tea! Should be fun! I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your help!
